Damaged Before Delivery

Sooo, went to pick up my M40i today and there was a dent/paint chip just below the X3 badge (Dark Graphite Metallic). I rejected delivery; dealer said they would fix it. If it were a dent without a paint chip, probably no big deal, but the paint chip worries me (felt to be fairly deep). I assume they either need to fill and feather out the paint, or repaint the entire tailgate (which seems problematic at best). Salesperson mentioned "moving the paint" after the dent was rolled out, not sure how that plays out.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I have low confidence that it is going to come out correct and not happy about driving away in an expensive, custom-ordered vehicle that has already needed repair.

How big? Any pictures?

Assuming they can get the dent out, they will probably airbrush the chip. That can be a fairly good repair that you won't notice if done by an expert. I've seen them work miracles.

I would not accept it if they repaint the entire tailgate.

Sorry that your Custom ordered M40i has been damaged. If they “spot paint” the damaged area without clear coating from edge to edge, then that won’t last. A lot of dealers have independent guys that come in to “quick fix” issues like yours, typically a used car, and their work is very marginal at best. If it were mine, I would not accept the car and re-order, but that’s just me. Good luck.

Didn't think to take pictures at the moment. I would say the length of the chip is about half the length of a fingernail, so it's fairly small. The dent is also small, circular around the chip.

Planning to wait and see how it looks after repair, and go from there I suppose. If it's not right, I won't accept and they can order a MY19 with the same deal, or I can walk away. Things will happen to cars, but shouldn't be driving off the lot in anything less than showroom condition. Frustrating, but glad I saw it before I did paperwork.

I had an X5 where they installed the front license plate bracket when they shouldn't have. It was removed leaving two holes. They repaired the bumper. If you are willing to wait for another vehicle to be produced do that. But if you are not then have them do the fix.

If leasing I'd negotiate a huge discount then take it.

Buying, not leasing (and I totally agree with you on the idea if leasing). Was planning to keep about 5 years or so (ordered it with 21" wheels and a second set of 19s for the winter).

Curious - how did they repair that bumper?

It was sent to their body shop that the dealership network uses. Not sure exactly of the material used. The repair took care of the holes and looked good. Front bumper then had clearbra installed to protect from rock chips.

That sucks man. I feel like the paint on these BMW's is soft or something. I put PPF on the whole front, then while driving less than a month into owning it, some rock popped up or something and chipped the driver's side lower door along that sharp angle. Super obnoxious. I feel like the front windshield is soft too. I've got a ton of tiny marks already after three months...But I agree on not leaving the lot in something already dinged up unless they give you a nice discount.

You already know deep inside to reject it! So reject it. You want a MY19 anyway. Not sure where you are located, but it only takes a few weeks to arrive and I'm sure the dealer's rep can find you a quick build slot.

I doubt your dealership wants a bad review from a new delivery, so they will repair properly if you stay on it.

Not sure what would be best in this case, but unless the dealership admits the back in happened on their watch, they will blame on shipping and work to be reimbursed by BMW or the transport company.

Just be sure to inspect closely and take your time to walk around the car. Take pictures for your records.

Dealership should be very nice to you in the future, just don't be a jerk about it, things just happen. This can be fixed.

I have a similar situation where my roof spoiler is peeling on the edges. I have reached out to BMW of North America and they didn't seem to care. They said reach out to the dealer. Wow I am really surprised.

At what point do you reach out to BMW NA? We have two issues that were noticed at delivery and have been waiting for a response from the SA.

What were the issues you noticed? Did you accept delivery and sign paperwork with the expectation that the issues would be resolved?

Yes, we signed the paperwork and accepted delivery - the SA took pictures and said it would be addressed.

Issues:
1) There were two scratches on the leather of the passenger headrest. We have the cognac and the scratches were very noticeable.
2) The rubber gasket at the bottom of the rear window has one location where it looks "pushed in", almost under the window. I'm surprised it made it out of the factory looking like it does.

I've rejected a newly delivered F30 because the transport driver bottomed out the the front fender. I told BMW to order me a new one. They weren't happy. And I would do it all over again. Remember your money is perfect, a new car with dents and chips isn't.

As I wait to see how my dealer repairs this vehicle to determine if it is acceptable, I see my vehicle in their new inventory online. Is it normal that all vehicles, even when "sold," are entered into new inventory on the site? I better not find out they are letting anyone test drive it...

Dang! I would call up anonymously and ask a sales guy if they happen to have one that is similar in color/specs on the lot (or just tell him the ID of the car you are seeing online) and ask if you can come test drive it and purchase. That will tell you what you need to know. Or have a friend do it. And report back.

I've seen pre-sold vehicles transferred in from another dealer show up on my dealer's website for a short period of time, until the buyer takes delivery, so I think some of this happens automatically.

Normal for dealers especially if they belong to an auto group.

It creates the illusion of more sales in my opinion .

When I got my X3 (custom order out of state) it showed up on the dealer website

Latest update:

Spoke directly to the body shop that is repairing the car. Turns out, there was also damage to the roof that I did not see. Both the roof and tailgate had dents removed and painted (paint blended and entire panels clear coated). The body shop deals with high-end exotics, so of any option, the vehicle is probably in the best hands.

The shop assured me that everything would be perfect - no fit/finish issues and the paint repair would be unnoticeable, but still not sure I can accept a vehicle that was taken apart to that extent though - sunroof was removed, headliner removed...who knows what noises I would be experiencing in a few months.

At the same time, I've read others posting noise issues that had to be repaired, so I guess anything could happen with any vehicle.

Only problem with waiting for a 2019 is inspection is due on the 428i end of August and would likely require two tires. Doubt I would get a 2019 before September. Could roll the dice and skip inspection.

Decision time when I see the vehicle, hopefully end of this week.

First-world problems, but nothing is ever simple...
