UK G31 540i xdrive

Afternoon all,

I am very happy to have recently taken delivery of a Saphire Black G31. I will confirm that I wholeheartedly agree with all of the praise already heaped onto the car. It's sublime.

Like most of you I have been lucky enough to have owned many many BMW's including both an e60 (535d) and an e61 (M5) and can confirm that this car is head and shoulders above both of them (and yes, I do realise I have just thrown the M5 into the ring against a non M 3 litre!)

The G31 in 540i xdrive is the first true Swiss Army knife of cars in my opinion. Not many miles driven but enough covered to recognise the 'seat of the pants' instant feel from new BMW's that this one is both different and special. It oozes luxury, is limo smooth yet still involving enough to put a smile on your face.

My only complaint is the same as I had with the e60 535d and that's wheel placement in the arches...queue the mods

Here is the new toy:

Excellent choice and like the colour too... I completely agree that the 540 is a very flexible car... It cruises along in near silence, but when you want to push along it responds well... Ok, so it is a big car, but it has an excellent chassis! To me it feels smaller than it is when driving...

Enjoy your new motor!

It has adaptive. Am interested in the AC Schnitzer front springs / rear air adjustment package...

I haven't found a definitive statement as to why the xdrive cars ride higher? I would consider lowering the car carefully though as it will have a second set of winter boots and be driven in the Alps during the winter months, I may well regret getting it lowered at that point!

AWD cars always ride slightly higher than their RWD counterparts. I'm guessing they add a bit of clearance for the front differential.

Audi seem to manage to keep ride heights the same between 2WD and AWD - they also though manage to make chassis that want to understeer into the apex of every corner mind you!

The passive M Sport suspension sits slightly lower than the active, even with the X drive.

I presume the active suspension sits higher to provide more travel, hence more comfort in comfort.

Hi culprit

I'm also interested in the AC Schnitzer springs. I have only found these, but not sure if they are compatible with adaptive dampers.
Please let me know if you get any info on that.

Congrats! Lovely looking car.

When these are stock, the wheels do look a little tucked in as you said. Ride height on an xdrive car is questionable too
