Launch Control: Technical description?
NOTE: I am not asking for instructions on how to activate launch control. I am asking for a technical description of exactly what it does, with detail beyond simply "makes the car launch faster".
My M40i finally crossed 1200 miles and so I tried launch control a few times, quite fun! I am curious as to exactly how it works. In past cars with launch control, I've learned that it can do various things like disconnecting the wheels from the transmission, etc, but on the X3 it also seems to change the stance of the vehicle, which implies it's powering the wheels against the brakes at least a little bit. So, to the legit BMW tech experts of this forum, I ask: Can anyone give a list of exactly how launch control configures the car for launch? Each little thing it does? Thanks! |

magic M fairy dust is released into the engine and LAUNCH happens
. Im not sure if this counts as technical but Brakes apply Engine spools and fights the brakes Launch control tries to manage wheel spin and voila

I found something interesting in an old article
https://www.bmw-m.com/en/topics/maga...h-control.html #4 Regulate rpm: You can regulate the starting speed using cruise control to 3,000 to 3,500 rotations per minute. A question, has anyone tried to change the default 3000 to 3500 using this technique and has it made the 0-60 or 1/4 faster? This might not be possible on our cars, but I'm curious to see if it is

I have no idea if this adjustable feature works on our m40i, but I plan to try it tonight, hopefully, someone tries it before me and updates us here

It appears this is something not programmed into our ZF trans unfortunately. Jeep SRTs have the feature though But I do know that when in Sport + the torque converter is locked which helps out the power down. Not sure what other aspects are done other then shifts being insanely quick. |
