Ac blowing hot air

Does anyone else notice at times the ac system just blows hot air for about 5-10 seconds? It’s like in auto mode it gets confused. Anyone else?

Mine does it too. Maybe 15 to 20 seconds. Then it cools.

The only time I've noticed this is when it's been sitting for a while. And in that scenario, it's just flushing the hot stale air as the compressor starts to cool. If I've been driving with the AC on for a while, it starts blowing cold air almost right away.

i find the AC to be way less efficient than the one in my previous cars, i have to increase the level significantly in order to actually feel cold air

It maybe worth getting that checked out, it's 26 degrees C here today and have been out with climate set to 18.5 and intensity set to 2 and it was all nice and cool, I am surprised at how quick it cools down in the heat we're having here at the moment

Yeah that doesn't sound right. There was a thread about people with the same experience as you. The consensus seemed to be that the car should actually be capable to keep you plenty cool - most people who experience what you are describing had some kind of malfunction, leak or freon shortage.

My car actually does a great job of keeping me cool. It’s just at some point, the ac blows hot air for a short period of time before going back to blowing cold air.

another thing for people to keep in mind, is if you are driving in eco pro mode, default settings make the ac significantly less effective. you should be able to feel an almost immediate difference if you switch to either comfort or sport. It actually seems to get even worse if the ASS kicks in. But at least you can change these settings in idrive for eco pro individual (or whatever its called)

i have the X3M40i - the a/c is great. But needed a loaner car, bmw gave me the X3 regular, and the a/c was significantly worse. I had to keep it full blast, and it was super noisy.

Probably lack of R134a cooling gas in the AC...

Same thing happens in my car. Just took an M40i loaner for the weekend and it happens in that car as well.

They have been using the latest R-1234yf refrigerant for a while now.

Hi guys,
I have also a question, in relation to this topic. When in Auto or Max is the cold air blowing from the vents close to the windshield? I can only set it to work from the windshield when in manual.
Thanks!

I’m not sure I’m understanding your question but there is a direction of flow button on the ac controls. Pressing the buttons multiple times will change the distribution of air and will be indicated in your ac display.

I think he's referring to the guy whose X3 didn't have any refrigerant. Apparently, the factory didn't put in any.

Indeed, when in Manual you can change the direction of flow. I was wondering if in Auto or Max you have cold air blowing from the vents close to the windshield?

I think those are only for defrost mode?

In Max AC mode, I believe the air blows from the front facing vents and windshield only on max fan speed (to cool the upper air). I had max ac on earlier today a few times, and I for sure wasn't blowing from the floor vents.

I took my X3 to the dealer due to warm AC. Turns out it needed refrigerant. Took delivery at the end of Dec 2017 and its unusual it would need refrigerant since hot weather only started here in May! Dealer found no leaks and suspects the factory did not put enough.

Mine works very good. Here in Spain, around 35-38ºC outside, sunroof curtain opened, with 21º setup and blowing position 1 or 2 keeps the car cool and comfortable.

Regarding blowing hot air, it does only for about 3-5 seconds when turning on the car with AC on after a long while parked.

Just had a faulty o ring replaced for warm air through a/c. A trip to the dealer maybe warranted.
