Guess iDrive 6.0 won't get Alexa integration?

https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/29/bm...gets-it-right/

According to TechCrunch, Alexa integration will only be on models produced after March 2018 and running iDrive 7.0. Aren't all G01 X3s running iDrive 6.0?

It's odd though - the test screen shots and all videos of Alexa integration show it on iDrive 6.0.

Yes all G01's are currently on 6.0, seems a strange quote on that site as cars with idrive 7.0 aren't even out yet, may bode well for the G01 to be updated to idrive 7.0 next year, but too late for us current owners

I think it's more for things like "Alexa, turn on my driveway lights" in automotive applications. BMW isn't the only one adding Alexa to cars as others see some value in it.

I find it also unusual that it is limited to iDrive 7.0 yet the article mentions seeing a demo on a 2015 X5.

I'm willing to bet they got the OS version wrong. Why mention cars produced around March 2018 or after... were any cars produced then with idrive 7.0?

BMW is not Tesla, we don't get new features after we bought our cars.

I’m more interested in getting Skype for Business integration as part of connected+

Super frustrating not easily being able to join online meetings (voice) when on the road

So I want to believe there is still hope, the article opens with:

"BMW will in a few days start rolling out to many of its drivers support for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant."
That's great! But...
"just to clarify, the update with Alexa functionality will be available for all BMW’s that were produced after about March 2018 and that run the new BMW OS 7.0."
So no one has iDrive 7.0 so there is no way it could be going to any...right?

This is why when I originally read it I thought it was more like or, just worded odd. Such as:
"will be available for all BMW’s that were produced after about March 2018 or that run the new BMW OS 7.0."
Saying 6.0 could mean that everyone with 6.0 would be going "hey where is alexa!"

Then maybe there is this crazy thing BMW could do and actually be upgrading iDrive for cars produced after March 2018.

I wish more articles came out about this, seems funny only techcrunch has got something.

As much as I love/ed my BMW’s there is one thing they simply do not do... upgrading idrive’s. Once the car is yours, no turning back had two X1’s and was desperate to get Apple Carplay support - idrive was too old. Maybe MY20 will have an upgrade of idrive like with my X1’s case where they upgraded MY18’s.

The article has been updated. There is no requirement for iDrive 7.0. March 2018 production seems to be the cutoff.

I wonder why the random March 2018 date. I highly doubt BMW switched processors on 2018 X3s starting in March, but that's just me.

well, they did switch the location of the exterior badges around that time. because of changes to another car (at least that's what appeared to happen). it's entirely likely they started putting newer processors in other vehicles, and figured it would be easier to keep track if they just updated everything at the same time. nobody would notice a difference if nothing else changed.

I just tested Alexa with iDrive 6 on my 2019 G01.

I can perform the simple functions - lock/unlock, ventilate and ask quick questions like range or windows shut or not.

Sounds like you are referring to the BMW Connected Alexa skill. That has been around since 2016 and works with all cars built in 2014 or later.

This form post is about Alexa being built into the car, so you could do Alexa voice commands while driving.

It could also be as simple as March builds (and newer) have a newer software version that supports Alexa.

  • Alexa's success rate in understanding my voice is far superior to all other assistance I use on a daily basis (siri or bmw voice).
  • The ability to use more natural language for commands will be very helpful
  • Most importantly the ability to setup routines will be killer

A example routine I would setup.

"Alexa, I'm heading home"

- Send a message to my wife notifying her of my ETA at home.
- Turn on the lights in the garage.
- Tells me the traffic report.
- Sets my navigation to take me home.
- Turn to NPR.

On the X1's, I believe they changed hardware to enable apple CarPlay midstream (ie not a major update)- in Australia anyway it was tied to cars made after a certain date in dec 2017.
