Who DOESN'T have the oil cooler and isn't concerned?

It turns out my 2008 335xi 6 speed manual non sport package coming next week to Vancouver probably does not have the oil cooler. Who has not had a problem not having an oil cooler? I am not going to race my car but like to push it on occasion ( a short hard blast for a minute or so), should I be concerned? Is it more necessary in hotter climates than Vancouver?

hey, i have an 08 335xi with no oil cooler. I routinely push my car pretty hard and we have had some 90 degree days so far. My oil temp hasnt gone past the half way mark yet. I really dont think you'll have an issue.

I push my 08 335xi pretty hard and have only seen temps barely above 250 once. I have heard the only time you really would need one is if you Auto-X your car at all. Otherwise I would not be too worried about it.

Same as ttxi, no cooler, pushed it hard hasn't broke the halfway mark yet...if they offered me a freebie, I'd take it though!

Will only be a problem if you decide you want to track your car.

A BMW that you can't take to the track, now that is sad.

What's really sad is that on our warranty contract, it clearly states that if you take your vehicle to a track, they can deny your warranty claims.

I disagree. Someone I know who may or may not be me may or may not have taken his car to the track 11 times last summer (ya, 11). Temperatures may or may not have been over 30C on several occasions; he did not have any issues with his non-oil cooler having car.

I was trying to specifically test my car for overheating last week for several days in temperatures from 105-109F pushing it very hard all the time. But my oil temps never went above 240 degrees.

I've had my '07 e92 335i for nearly 2 years now and don't have the oil cooler. I drive it hard a few times a week, sometimes daily, and haven't had any issues. I've been to two autocrosses where it got hot, but not enough to worry about it. I haven't taken it to the track and probably won't as I race and would rather drive a racecar on the track any day over a street car.

The last time I was at the dealership I spoke to the salesguy and he was asking me whether I had the oil cooler. He was surprised it didn't have it, and said he could try to help me get one if I wanted it. I may take him up on the offer, but frankly I am happier when I don't have to screw around with the dealership, etc. If they'll offer to put one in and all I have to do is bring the car by, fine, but I'm not going to work myself up with phone calls, emails, letters, and the like. It's not worth it.

good one

I don't think it's necessary to have an oil cooler; but if you can get one at no charge then go ahead!

The one with curves?

1/4 mile is not that hard on the cooling system - it only lasts 12-15 seconds, lol.

I do not know how those without coolers do not go past the half-way mark. I routinely hit 250-260 cruising at 80 or so on the interstate. Have had it spike to about 280 a couple times. Once was cruising 90-100 revving up and down on the interstate and another time it occurred after cruising on the highway and coming to a dead halt because of traffic. Not really concerned about it though.

Not sure what more to say to you as this has been discussed to death and there is SO MUCH evidence that your experience is in the minority and IMO not realistic to expect. Non oil cooler cars WILL run hotter than OC equipped at the track. If you have an auto tranny, you are at risk of running hot enough to shut down if the ambient conditions are right. I saw it again just 4weeks ago at our local school.

There is a direct correlation between how hard the car is driven, the ambient temps and how hot it gets. Me, as an instructor, with a 6MT plus oil cooler, the OT will run 285 at about 85 ambient. With my GF driving the car in C group, the OT runs 265-270. The faster you go, the hotter it gets.
