Thermostat Replacement without Coolant Drain

Got the dreaded P0597 - Thermostat Stuck Open error code a few weeks ago. Unlike other cars, modern BMWs have the sense to design the t-stat to fail open. This prevents your precious engine from going KABOOM in a short time span. A call to my local BMW dealership they quoted me $223 for the t-stat alone plus another obscene labour rate of $300. So…. DIY it is. Picked up a MAHLE unit from Amazon for $90.

The interweb has a few of BMW thermostat change instructions and videos. However only one youtube video pertians N20 on a 528i. And it was a bit grainy. Also I was a bit stingy wanting to minimize draining the fresh (less than a year old) coolant. That required some out of the box planning. That said, if your coolant is old enough, you should just drain it.

Be forewarned, this is a messy job. There's no way around it.

Tools needed:
- 8mm socket wrench
- T30 Torx with extension socket
- Pliers
- Flat head
- Nitrile gloves
- Big drain pan
- Funnel with small hose attached into a bottle (I used to this to capture the inevitable coolant hose splash)

  1. With 8mm socket wrench unscrew the bolts for the underbody tray. Cant' remember how many.
  2. I used turkey baster to suck out coolant from the expansion tank
  3. Unclip the PCV hose. Gawd that thing smells. I stuck some newspaper to protect and keep smell away
  4. Flat head away to remove the air intake plumbing. Cover the inlets/outlets to prevent coolant spilling in
  5. Flat head away the clamps that held 2 of the 3 coolant hoses. The other one requires a clamping plier. OPTIONAL: I replaced that clamp with the worm-screw style clamp.
  6. As I removed each hose, I put the funnel underneath it to catch coolant spill. There are lots of space for a good size bottle. Use your creativity!
  7. T30 to remove the twin torx screws holding the T-Stat. I find this is the hardest because I can't see jack squat despite removing the hoses and cables away. Some coolant spilled. Arrghh!
  8. Replace malfunction t-stat with MAHLE unit and reverse action on everything.
  9. In the end I had to replenish about ~3L worth coolant (BMW finest concentrates $30 and Walmart's finest distilled water @$0.99)
  10. Perform the e-water pump bleeding step (lots of guides abound). Make sure you have a battery charger hooked up as it takes 10 minutes for it to complete the process.
  11. After that I just hosed down the engine bay.
  12. Reset the CEL code. Go for a drive.

That's about it.

Sadly no. BMW Canada seems to think Canadian X1s are more robust....well except for the Takata airbags.

Got the P0597 code this week just over 80k KM's. I'm also thinking of doing myself after a call to BMW Canada to see if it still may be covered. But I doubt it

If you register your VIN in BMW.ca's myBMW portal, you can check for outstanding recalls.

Just for us Canuck as in the U.S.A. and Mexico. This part has a extended warranty for the engine coolant thermostat for ten years or 192,000 km!

"Thank you for contacting BMW Canada regarding your 2014 BMW X1 28i’s warranty coverage.

It was with great disappointment that we read of your concerns regarding the thermostat repairs required in your X1. Please be assured, the quality of our vehicles receives our constant attention, nevertheless, despite our best efforts, a problem may occur with a particular vehicle or component. BMW Canada provides a manufacturer's warranty that is valid for four years or 80,000 km, whichever should come first, to cover any manufacturer's defects during the warranty parameters. Although the original manufacturer’s warranty for your X1 has expired, I am pleased to inform you that our records show that your vehicle also received a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) extended warranty to a total of six years or 160,000 km, whichever should come first, which is still in effect and will expire by November 30, 2019. This X1 also has a component-specific extended warranty for the engine coolant thermostat for ten years or 192,000 km, whichever should come first, which is still in effect and will expire by November 30, 2023. Therefore, the cost of eligible defect-related repairs in your vehicle will be covered under warranty. We kindly request that you work with your preferred BMW service center to diagnose and complete any necessary repairs for your vehicle.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Customer Interaction Centre at 1-800-567-2691. Again, thank you for contacting BMW.

Sincerely,

BMW Canada"

I got the p0597 code for my 2013 X1 2.8 x drive. IS it possible that:
A. Coolant leak can cause the code and/or old expired coolant running in the system
B. Failed T-Stat/needs replacement
c. Possible loose/faulty connection from wire to unit

What is common with this vehicle? Has Approx 125k miles. Also has a P0442 small Evap leak, is that most likely an easy fix with a new gas cap?

B or C would be the most likely cause of P0597, with it more than likely being a failed Thermostat. It looks like you are outside of the warranty period for the thermostat, because there is an extended warranty for that specific item (known to fail). If you are relatively handy, it looks simple to replace the thermostat, but messy. If you go to the stealership, I would guess you are looking at around $750 to replace and it might just be time for you to get a new water pump at the same time.

Good Luck!

Replacing the gas cap would be the easy/cheap fix that I would try first. Not sure how much they cost..... maybe $10-$20? I would buy a new gas gap and install, then clear codes to see if it reappears again.
