Intercooler before remap?

I told a friend that I plan on remapping my 420d and he highly recommended I get a bigger inter cooler beforehand and said it could potentially add another 80bhp. Would anyone condone this and are the gains accurate? Not sure what the price will look like but want to make sure this is actually worth it before I consider it. Also not looking to turn my car into some race car, just want a reasonably powerful daily that's RELIABLE most of all. I know that with a single remap now it will be reliable with decent gains (50 more hp), but if I can put an inter cooler in beforehand and get more gains without hurting the car too much I'll go for it.

Any help/advice appreciated.

He basically said that more cold air will mean when they remap they can push the car more.

Not another thread about remaps and intercoolers! No it won’t get you 80bhp.

Just remap it and forget about it

It could add a few extra horses, but realistically it won't make much difference to max power.. Closer to 5bhp extra rather than 80

It will mainly help keep the temps lower and maintain the power when the cars pushed hard on high boost for longer periods.

You’d have to drive like an absolute maniac on the road to get enough heat soak on the standard intercooler to reduce power!

Agreed, if you want the very best, upgrading the intercooler then getting a custom map to make the best of it all would be the way to go.
It will be a relatively small gain, compared to the gain of a remap with the standard intercooler in place, but if you want the best possible its your money. Just do the research to make sure you get an intercooler that is actually significantly better than stock.

Awesome guys thanks for giving me some insight, will go ahead with the map since it doesn't seem worth it money-wise. Much appreciated!

He didn't mention that the first time because they only add 50bhp

I'm guessing the intercooler on those cars are significantly different to my last one (A Focus ST225), changing the intercooler after a remap made a significant difference to the top end. The standard intercooler was beyond poop.

Hahaha I did stop listening and he did recommend k&n filters but said they're just for the noise xD but yeah I'm pretty sure he meant that it can give you those kind of gains with a upgraded turbo, a bigger inter cooler and a remap on-top of all that.
