Over the air map updates

So I've been rocking 2018-1 maps for as long as I've owned the 440i (~April 2018).
I thought these were supposed to auto update maps, over the air.
I checked the connected drive website last night(I'm booked for OTA), and sure enough there is 2018-3 sat waiting to download... Cracked out the 64Gb USB stick and set it off...

So the question is: Why is BMW so bad at this IT stuff?

By the way, there are lots of other things IT that BMW do pretty badly so let's not get started on that one... Spotify integration take a bow etc...

It’s broken, and BMW are obviously covering up the reason, at a guess it’s probably due to stress on the Vodafone network with 1000’s of BMW’s downloading a map file of many gb’s 3 times a year!

I think I picked up from the G20 announcement that "for the first time all G20 models will have OTA updates". They must be planning something new regarding delivery to the car.

I don't know why they can't at least email to say when the new map is available in Download Manager...

Agreed, I'm still waiting for 2018-2 for my Business Nav.

Are you sure you are looking at the right thing?
As far as I know, there are 2 separate digital map products and updates:

- Digital map data for own country updated OTA (if the service is booked)
- Digital map data for Europe (e.g. 2018-3) which is only updatable over USB (separate service agreement)

I for example have only a subscription for the second service as I don't see any benefit for me to pay more to have more frequent local updates (I rarely use navigation locally).
But those that have both services booked only get the local updates periodically OTA and the 2018-X maps are still only updated manually over USB.

Correct - it also shows as two separate tiles on the connected drive portal.

The UK maps are updated as part of the over the air map updates.
The USB map updates allow you to download the file and apply via USB.

The OTA is smaller amounts of data as its just your home country - but in 18 months its never worked for me...which is fine, as I am okay doing the USB update instead.

BTW you can change your OTA update country in the Connected Drive Portal under Map Update tile in Connected Drive online.

I have 'Automatic Map Updates' showing in Connected Drive for my 2018 F80 and in the description it says "The newest generation of the navigation system professional combined BMW ConnectedDrive automatically updates its navigation map data up to 4-times per year. As soon as a new navigation map version is available for a predetermined region, the update is transferred via the integrated SIM card directly into the vehicle."

Funny how I can manually happen to notice newer versions & download them sooner than their 'as soon as'... Car was built in June & it arrive in August still with 2018-01 so I manually downloaded 02 onto it... Currently on 03 - again a manual download (keen to get a new local road that has been open well over a year that I use all the time on it)... Not at all fussed about OTA but they could at least notify when a new map is out...

My car just updated to 2018-1 last week. Two weeks previous to that my wife's car updated to 2018-2!

Mine did an update a week or two back (so it told me). I haven't checked the version, but it doesn't feature the fairly major road that I drive on that opened last Xmas. Will check the version at some point...

That's a bit odd as 2018-3 is current!

It's absolutely clear from this thread that BMW just do not have a Scoobie do.
How difficult can it really be to synchronize all the Nav updates. At least when people manually download them for Christ's sake..
Bloody awful and makes you think what else can they not get right.
This kind of thing really erodes confidence in the brand...

When i first got my car it told me there was an update 2017-3 and installed it OTA.

I then manually downloaded 2018-1 and it never did the OTA again... so either it was a timing coincidence or as i updated the full map it never updated the OTA again.

No Europop on the Pro Nav Hard Drive
Start Stop Enabled, Eco Pro on and > 1/2 tank of fuel

(Dear people in the US, this is not what I actually think the pre-reqs are)

PS As I typed Pro Nav I'm questioning, I'm pretty sure Business Nav users not have OTA updates too. So class related question.....all Pro Nav updates priority head of Bus Nav... ?
