Navigation Option to Avoid Highways Question

I tried searching but didn't come up with an answer. When setting preferences for the GPS navigation system, there is an "Avoid Highways" option which has been activated, but the GPS still seems to take my wife onto highways. Our previous experience with GPS navigation systems is with Acura, Magellan, Google Maps and Waze. All of those seem to do a much better job of avoiding highways. This is my wife's car and it's not a question of different settings for different drivers or key 1 or key 2, it is only her driving the car. Right now she is using Google Maps through Apple Carplay to successfully avoid highways as she hasn't had much luck with the BMW system. Is this a German thing that they only consider Interstates to be highways? Or does she need to do something else to stay off highways?

Stay with Google Maps. It is a much better navigation system than BMW.

Hmmm. You could perhaps assign a freeway as an area to avoid as a work around. I’m not sure if it would work but just an idea.

Thanks, we'll look into that.
