Towing

My vehicle was not ordered with the towing package. Does anyone know if I'd be able to add towing capability later on?

I don't see why not. It is bound to be more expensive than if you had specified it when ordering the car.

I'm sure there will be some aftermarket ones like Invisahitch (sp?) but you won't achieve the full towing capacity of 7,200lbs. For some reason you only get that with the factory installed hitch.

if you order the towing package then the foot opening of trunk is disabled but factory install definitely looks nicer

Is this confirmed? That would not be good since I actually use the foot opening feature quite a bit.

I remember reading a thread on the X3 side and that was the case for them. Have not heard it be the case for the X5. For the X3 it was because the factory hitch occupied the same space as the foot sensor, so they couldn't co-exist.

I had emailed BMW Genius regarding this same question a few weeks ago and they wrote back with this: "Comfort Access includes the ability to open and close the tailgate using the Smart Trunk "Kick to Open" procedure. If the vehicle is equipped with the trailer hitch time of production, this feature is removed. "

To be clear, what I hear Bimmer2019 saying is that even if the towing package is installed by the factory, the "Kick to Open" procedure would not work (i.e. its either one or the other), correct?

That was my impression... that if you opt got trailer hitch add on, they will remove kick to open feature.

Yea, that's what it appears to be. Bummer.

Your dealer can install it but the tow rating drops.

If that is the case then the foot action stays? And typically howich does it cost?
