Apple Carplay and Android Phone

I know this may be a stupid question. But if I have an android phone will I be able to use any of the carplay features? Will I be able to use maps, waze, whatapp, etc...

If yes, what wont I be able to use?

Thank you

No unfortunately not. You need android auto which I love alot more with more features and apps then CarPlay. Unfortunately BMW is very stubborn and wont allow this feature like I have on my Audi A7.

No CarPlay features for Android phones...however you still get the following and a couple things iPhone users can't do:

- Bluetooth Audio
- Miracast Screen Mirroring (when vehicle is in park, iPhone can't do this)
- NFC access to the car, which allows you to share access to your car with another Android user (iPhone can't do this one yet either)
- BMW Connected App control

I had thought that maybe it would work standalone and just needs my phone for some integration (messages, etc...) but waze or google maps would work without direct integration as long as the car had data signal

Both of these features have been available available via iPhone with iD5 and iD6.

Correct. Only the 2 items I mentioned in parentheses are not available with the iPhone.

NFC access only works on 2-3 Sansumg phone models. Bluetooth Audio and connected app control have always been there.

OP just get an iPhone and be happy!

As someone who works in technology and has to deal with phones constantly, I can safely say that the iphone is the smart phone for not smart people. It is way to limiting and cant do half of what I have my android doing

iOS is a closed ended system meaning the functionality of the iPhone is restricted to what the manufacturer (Apple) thinks you should be able to control. Android is open source so Google doesn't try to control what you have access to or what you can use the phones features/hardware for.

The reason this is an issue for iPhone in the case of the X5 is that Apple until the newest software update did not give app developers like BMW connected services access to their NFC functionality. The NFC was limited to use with ApplePay only. With the iOS update we hope BMW will be able to use this feature to implement the digital key function.

That's my understanding. Anyone with better knowledge can feel free to correct me.

That openness and lack of privacy is what has kept Android Auto from BMW.

Yes so the security is the flip side to the Android operating system. The issue we have with phones is that you either have a closed ended system like iOS and then people have issues with functionality, or, you have an open source system like Android and you have security issues associated with me. Apple isn't immune to hacking but it's harder.

Wouldn't is just be easier if these companies just gave consumers the option to have one built with an IDS/IPS (intrusion detection/intrusion prevention) system to increase security. I would gladly pay extra for that as an option.

I am not sure what your point is exactly??? BMW should get up to speed and make this feature available. Audi had it for a while now and everyone has been using it without issues. Lets get moving BMW, no need to restrict or decide what we owners can or should use. Lets us be the judge of what we want including privacy etc.

BMW is not alone on this

"Android Auto tracks variables including vehicle speed, throttle position, fluid temperatures, and engine revs, information that is collated and then sent back to Google. Apple's CarPlay, on the other hand, only checks with the car's powertrain control module to ensure that the vehicle is moving"

That reason is ridiculous. BMW is so concerned about their customer's privacy when all other auto manufacturers support Android? It would be one thing if they'd just build a quality navigation system.

Let's hope that they finally built a system that actually understands your voice and can respond to natural language like google can. The few demo's I've seen are encouraging but the Germans have been SO bad at their nav input systems that either they need to finally build a quality system or allow their customers to use the system they want (and manage their own privacy).

Sorry - off soap box.

It is the other way around, it is Google that is choosing not to have Android Auto work without it siphoning every bit of information the car has and sending it back to Google. BMW is doing the right thing and standing their ground. It is not a popular decision, but the right one nonetheless.

Android Auto doesn't need any of that information to work properly.

I use AA and Google maps in my Corvette. I wish I could do the same in my BMW. Oh well, life goes on.
