Manual transmission available for the G20, but not in the US

I posted this question on BMWs Instagram G20 launch post 2 weeks ago and I just got this reply a few hours ago. Whew the suspense was all worth it. Rejoice my fellow BMW purists

MT has been an option for some G20 models according to the first BMW Press Releases.

We get MT on some lower output models in the UK, (like the 320d. 320i), but MT is not available on all models. How the US fares is another story, from my understanding.

MT was announced as standard on the 320i/320d but yeah, the big question is whether the US will get them.

I guess I could have been more specific on my original inquiry:

Here's a more specific question from another IG poster

Unless I'm still missing something, that second post is vague. Doesn't confirm any more than we already know, a limited fitting of MT in a few models, in 'some' markets.

Well to me it does confirm a manual transmission will now be available in the US. The uproar was manual not being offered in the US initially. So this confirmation on Instagram is good enough news for people here in North America. I'm pretty sure they'll be giving more specific information on which variants will have the MT option sooner than later.

Why do you think BMW's instagram account is talking about the US? I've never seen them make specific statements, they are always referring to "your local dealer". The initial statement that MT will be available in general still holds true.

I hope you are correct in your conclusion.

Here in the UK where we do get MT in the 320d RWD, we don't have a MT option for the 330i. MT is going to be very limited over here, even for a market dominated by MT just a few years ago. XDrive, no MT's at all listed on the UK configurator.

Isn't the order sheet for the 330i available in the US now? Someone could contact a dealer and find out for sure. I would assume it'd only be on the lower models like in Europe at best.

Richsaturday: You didn't ask specifically whether the 6MT would be available in the US and the person that did got a vague response from BMW.

There have been many, many articles indicating that no manual option would be available for the G20 in the US. I chose to believe those articles until BMW proves otherwise.

Man, people really only see what they want to see lol. The response only confirms manuals will be offered for some models in some markets. We've already heard they will be available on the 320/320d, which are NOT coming to the US. Nothing in that post even insinuates that manuals are destined for US shores.

The response in the second posting was fudgy; the question was specifically about the US market. However the OP's question also fudgy! This is the corporate BMW channel, they're answering questions from all over the world, and the answer to the second post reads as if they didn't see the reference to that particular market, or did, but got the answer wrong.

It's just a standard canned answer, nearly identical to the original post above. Nobody on Instagram or any social media will provide that type of detail, they'll always refer you to your local dealer

That IG account is for BMW global. BMWNA has its own IG account. I agree with the other posters that BMW's response was a canned answer that points to manual transmissions being available in some markets on some trims. As we learned from the released info, manuals will be on some lower trim levels which will not be available in the US.

I'm afraid to even get my hopes up. At least 330i would be nice with MT if they're building m340i to go after C43 and other fast automatic-only sedans.

I wouldn't trust a social media account manager's response. They might have been told that is the case for certain markets which we already know is the case. Everything we've been told so far is that it won't be offered in the U.S. and especially on the higher output models.

Let's not get our hopes up over an Instagram comment.

THIS!

To OP: if you want a US specific response your should ping bmwusa Twitter or bmwusa instagram. Even then you won't get a strait answer but it will be more usa focused.

BMW has stated: globally, having nothing to do with the USA specifically, the 330 and M340 will not offer a manual transmission. However you feel personally, this is the fact.

richsaturday you should’ve asked if the G20 will continue to offer US customers ED or if all G20s will come from Mexico. And ask them if Mexican Delivery will be offered if they take away ED.

Also, I think if enough current BMW customers ask and bitch the product planners at BMW NA enough, they might introduce one. (Think E60 M5 which was never supposed to offer one at all for ANY market.)
