Coolant Warning?

Hi all

I've had a coolant level warning light come on this morning. BMW serviced the car back in June all levels were fine and there is no noticeable leak.

I've not had a chance to check the levels in the engine yet came straight to work, but a warning like this always makes me think there maybe a problem somewhere. Maybe a hose loose or sensor issue? Never had to add coolant to any car I've owned and the engine seemed to be running hot this morning.

Anyway else had this warning before? Just wanted other peoples opinions before I let them start 'investigation' work!!

Have you got rock guards fitted to your rad?

Nothing Like a stone in the Rad for a low coolant level warning.

Good point, no I don't have and thinking about I was out yesterday driving down a country lane when I did hear stone/small rock hit the front of the car. I did check and there was no noticeable damage to the bodywork but didn't check the rad.

Incidentally it's a 2016 car, shouldn't it have rad guards fitted as standard?
I'm not aware it has any

To my knowledge they weren't compulsory until late January 2018

Strangely enough I had the same on Saturday morning. First time - May 2017 440i, couldn't be bothered to go to steelers.

Opened reservoir, yes coolant well below max level, amazon one day delivery Comma XSG1L 1L Xstream G48 £7.45. Topped up, no messages since, but will manually check level in a couple of days.

If in warranty/out of warranty with your dealer apply pressure for a contribution if you need a replacement rad, for poor guarding, hence why would they made it a stock item on all cars late Jan 2018.

My March 17 340i had this warning on the way to work last week, it's covered 11,500 miles and I've had no signs of a leak, I was going to top up myself but after the other reports of stone damage to radiators I decided to call out Bmw assist, also because then there is a log of issues with the coolant if it's an ongoing problem I need to press them on. The reservoir was bone dry and took quite a bit of fluid.

Either way it's not great on a car like this. I've never had this with any car I've owned, especially before it's first service even.

I had to have the adaptive cruise module at the front replaced as it went tits. I totally forgot but should have had the rock guards installed then saving the man hours as the front end was already off.

Parts here for the 320i

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=17_0982

Looks like they're only listed for the B family of engines.

Still in warranty, but I guess it will be classed as 'wear and tear'.

But yes for sure I'm prepared to have a moan and see what they come up with

Mines a B48 so should be ok. If it is the radiator then it makes complete sense to have a guard fitted at the same time

Thanks

Took my 320i B48 in for its first service at 2 years old and a few days later I had the low coolant light come on. I took the car back to BMW in case they had disturbed something. They pressure tested the system and found no leaks. Coolant topped up ( a very small amount they said) That was almost 12 months ago and I have not had anything wrong since.
