Odd Check Engine w/ JB2H at Road Atlanta
....so I get a solid check engine light on the back straight-away at Road Atlanta. it was the yellow one and not the red w/ half engine sign thank goodness. I immediately back off the throttle to make sure everything is cool and pit.
I experienced this for the first time EVER with JB2H on mix of 93 + 100 (3-4 gal). The light come on coming off Turn 7 and quickly upshifting at 3/4 throttle to full throttle into 4th gear. The manual explains the light as follows: Indicator lamp 1 comes on: Engine malfunction with adverse effect on exhaust emissions Solution: Have the car checked as soon as possible I never saw car temps above 250 degrees so I don't believe it was triggered by temperature. The temps at the track were constant at around 86 - 90 degrees both days with humidity around 30 - 40%. I also don't have any other exhaust mods i.e. dp's, air intake, etc...only have tune and DV's. I don't believe the DME retarded timing at that point but not sure? This is why I added the race fuel anyway, to advance timing in those conditions. Would running a mix of 100 octane have triggered any of the multiple 02 sensors to throw that light at the high output level I was at that particular moment? What may have caused it? Just want to eliminate other possible issues for future track events since I will continue to run this setup. The fact that it came on only once and not again has been buggin me all weekend! I ran without issues the rest of the day Sat. and Sun so I find this kind of odd I had to pull in pit to shut off, then restart for the light to go away. |

the event was phenomenal!!! orginized so well, the competitors (oops!) STUDENT DRIVERS were all great to be around, the instructors were top notch and so knowledgeable of the track, input/feedback from everyone was always welcomed....definitely an event worth attending over and over again. I can't wait for next time I go down Highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity. And yes, I met Tom and his dad. His dad drove down his 335. I was envious that he gets to play with both a 335 and 135!!! So where were YOU Mr. Scalbert??? |

btw, this is what Terry had to say when I described the deal....
"If you had some race gas mixed in I doubt it was an octane/timing issue. But my first guess would be you hit the solenoid duty cycle limit. With temps in the 80-90s during sustained WOT the ECU raises boost (when it should be lowering it!). We've set the JB2(H) boost curve low enough to accommodate for this change, but you may have just gone over the edge. This happens to people with the X switch when the base boost setting is too high. AKA what I refer to as the over boost code (although technically it's an under boost code). If you don't already have the new bypass try that, if you do then I would remove the hot pill if temps are going to be similar next time. Or get an X upgrade so you can adjust the boost to 1/2 hot pill, etc. It is also possible your water temp went over the limit (~245 degrees?), which is very common. The real solution is the JB3 which controls the solenoids directly and has much smarter temperature based boost control" |

Well, on Friday I was under the hood of Tom's 135i. But had other plans on the weekend; moving a friend as well as a party my wife scheduled me at. I'm planning on joining in on a future event though. Hopefully in cooler weather though. |

as a matter of fact yes, everything else except the tune was stock. I was very surprised on how well the brake rotors and pads held up, in particular braking on 10A and 10B....I can't imagine how much better my laps will be once I get my suspension tuned and brakes upgraded!
