Question 105+ degrees = lower oil temps???

Just noticed something over the last few days of near and over 100 degree temps. My oil temp falls below 230 now. The only thing I've changed on the vehicle is remove the golf tee mod, as it's "closed window" weather now !

I doubt that has anything to do with oil temps. I have the Dinan tune and have been in some stop and go, highway and city commuting. If I get on the throttle, it will hit 240, but as soon as I back off, it drops to 230 or thereabouts.

My question is: Could my car have not been using the oil cooler until it got really hot outside and then the thermostat enabled the cooling?

I know little about the bmw oil cooler except that it was recommended for this climate.

Anyone have any ideas?

yes I believe the oil cooler kicks in during the higher ambient temps thats why you are seeing lower oil temps

It does makes sense, I wish I could control it a little better, where it can open up below 100 outside.

It opens up at a higher temp b/c the engines likes to run nice and warm. If it opens earlier car would take way too long to warm up.

I live in Dallas, have the stage 1 Dinan tune with stock oil cooler, and have noticed the same thing you have. The engine never gets above 240 and consistently drops down to 230 degrees, even in the 100+ weather. However, this only applies to street driving -- I've not taken it to the track yet since I've had the Dinan flash update.

From what I have read, the oil cooler thermostat is set to open at 240 degrees F to allow the engine to warm up easier, so that would probably explain it. Unless you are going above 240, there will be no oil running through the cooler. I think 240F is also the middle gauge point for the newer oil temp gauges too (mine is centered at 210)

I'm telling you, my 08 oil temp heats up faster, and runs warmer in normal driving than my 07 w/o the oil cooler.

After a ton of updates my car "seems" to warm up faster, more then likely its just the ambient temperature.

Now regarding the lower temp... this has been mentioned on this forums a few times and its kinda wierd... in NJ it can be 80 degress and my car will be at 240 when a counterpart in Fl it will be 100 and the car will be at 220-230.

Funny...I posted this very same observation a while ago and people called me crazy. The warmer it gets outside the cooler my oil stays.

Sorry, Bro, I should have searched, I figured I had something wrong with my gauge and everyone would call me crazy as well.

The hotter the outside air temps have been at the track, the lower my oil temps have been.
