One of my initial mods is to install K&N drop in air filters- the air boxes look the same as the M3/4 - will the M3/4 air filters work on the M2 C?

Yeah it was the first thing I did to the car too, they fit. Be careful taking the carbon strut brace off and on.

It’s a little difficult to tell what kind of difference I noticed, I put them in right after break in so I don’t have a great before/after comparison. It looks like there were some pretty significant gains (at least I consider significant) from people that put them in their m3/4 s55s. I like having the reusable filters too.

I’ve heard of performance gains of around 8 to 10 hp with reusable filters and removal of charcoal filters. I think that’s worth 90 bucks.

A little or both.

At higher RPM it helps the car breathe better..

The MAF sensor only allows for so much pre-programed air before it triggers an error, so a drop in charcoal is perfect amount of air flow, as oppose to a cone intake..

I had a factory oiled K&N on my Harley and you could see a film of oil and fine dirt on the back side every time you removed it. I also see customers here at the shop where I work that use them and there's always dust on the back sides of the filters.

Yes! I see car ads that I'm interested and as soon as I see the KN, turn away.

These are racing filters! Racing motors in a race are often rebuilt after each race no one is expecting their race motor to last 120,000 miles and 10 years.

It is really stupid to put one on a street car if you want your engine to last a long time.

Everyone has opinion of course in some cases where the car is never in a dusty environment it might not affect the engine whereas in some environment it would.

BMW made a performance intake for the E46 and they used a larger paper element that was arched in a U shape for better airflow but still a paper element.

Oiled filters are better if the filter is exposed to the elements where water would damage the paper. But then again if not done correctly, you could be drawing hot air into the engine and more dust and grime into the filter. Hot engine bay air will also break down the oil quicker.

In my autocrossing days I would put a freshly cleaned KN filter in my Scirocco for the weekend event, then put the factory one back in for daily driving. But leaving one of these in your $60K M2 for years is really not a good idea.

I'll stick with the stock filter. It flows well and by far picks up the most dirt and debris.

Most of what I’ve read is that high-flow or low-restriction filters don’t do as good a job filtering the air as an OEM paper filter. They also don’t flow as well as OEM paper once they start to get dirty. And they can deposit oil on the MAF sensor, leading to problems. We use them in race cars because they are cleaned after every race and do flow better at high RPMs where race cars run. For a daily driver, though, it’s a sketchy way to get maybe a few HP. After all, you’re filtering the intake air for a reason. So using an effective filter is best, even if you’re giving up a couple peak HP under ideal conditions. My two cents.
