iDrive 7.0 Navigation vs. Google Maps
Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the navigation system in a G05? I only have Android phones and I would rather not switch, but I also don't want to mount my phone somewhere in this beautiful car. I'm particularly interested in how the live traffic update works on the car vs. Google Maps, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area. Also, how often does the car's map get updated? I'm assuming there is no way for me to look up an address on my Android phone and have it pushed to the car's navigation system? On a side note, are the rear seats going to be adjustable once they start making 3rd row seats? I don't plan to get 3rd row seats though. Thanks. |

iDrive in general has ok traffic data but it's nowhere near what Google maps or Waze provides. I wish BMW would just incorporate AA because I hate iPhones even though i have one for work. I've gotten used to leaving my S9+ in the charging tray and using the iDrive maps. sometimes I check the route against Google maps to be sure it's the best one.

So far I love the new iDrive 7.0 navigation. It has all the new streets in our area and it has been 100% accurate every time we have used for turn-by-turn directions. And it looks SO much better than our 2016 528i nav! We haven't bothered with CarPlay or Google Maps yet...its that good in my opinion. And with the "Hey BMW" feature you can just tell it where you want to go and it works perfectly!
Plus with the iDrive nav you get the info displayed in the HUD and center of the instrument cluster. With CarPlay and Google Maps you lose those features...and the nav info on the HUGE HUD is brilliant!

iDrive7 being introduced with the G05. So, possibly the navigation and traffic data is improved compared to your experience with your X3. Once you get your X5 it would be great to hear about the iDrive comparison. |

Is this not the case with the built-in nav in iDrive 7? Also, since you are using CarPlay I take it you are not one of those that has had to disable ApplePay for iPhone issues?

Had zero issues with CarPlay. The Apple Pay that pops up, simply swipe the display and it's gone. Doesn't pop up again during the drive.

I really want to use the iDrive NAV functions so unless I think I really need to use Waze or Google for something I'm going to stick with it. The HUD is just so cool for NAV.

You can use the share sheet to share an address to the car via connected drive app

I was thinking of the screen mirroring.

BMW is waiting for the wireless AA protocol. They do not Google having USB /Can Bus access to the car.

Does iDrive 7 navigation have an address book like we had with the F15?
The manual refers to saving destinations as "favorites" so I suppose this functions the same way? Or is it better to designate a 'trip' with up to 30 intermediate locations? I like the way iDrive 7 gives us good options for starting a route, but I will be driving 3K next month and want the 15 stops already stored for easy access.

Sorry, resurrecting an old post... how do owners like the current iDrive navigation? I did some searching and I didn’t see any recent opinions. Better after some updates? Does it keep up with the traffic and closures? Does it still find locations thousands of miles away?
Also, will we get an update to iDrive 8? Taking delivery of a 45e in April, hopefully. Getting the nav in the HUD and center dash seems nice. People seem to think the Adaptive Mode works well, based on the nav info. Plus the 45e seems to use the navigation for battery efficiency. I’m fine with using waze in the background, if the nav provides a routing experience close to google, waze or Apple Maps. I’m also not a huge fan of CarPlay taking over the entire main display. With there was an option to split it to half of the display. Show BMW data on the other half. Maybe that a feature I’m not aware? |

Out of all the nav systems, i-drive is the worst from a pure routing perspective, but it's dependant upon region. The mapping data and traffic info providers make a big difference, but inherently the core routing engine in idrive is poor.
I'd put it, based on a UK G05 with i-step 03/2021 and latest maps: 1) Google Maps 2) TomTom 3) Apple Maps 4) Waze 5) idrive i-drive does have some benefits over the others due to native integration:
Ultimately though, if you are most concerned about getting the most efficient route at all times, with the best POI support, GM wins. Unlikely to get an update to ID8, although the press release mentioned back-port of some of the features. Probably the same back-port they talked about for TLA etc, which hasn't arrived yet either. Coding suggests that ID8 is scheduled for the G05 - MY23. You can't have idrive navigating with any other nav system at the same time. The exception to this is TomTom, which will work if you start TT first then ID nav. You can't split screen with CP. I do sometimes use ID nav. It's quicker, and does still offer DAP integration that the others cannot, such as the prompt to lane change on highways in preparation for an exit. I'd probably use a lot more with a 45e |

This week I drove from OK to TX and drove in and around DFW.
One strong point for the i-Drive nav is that it knew to route me into TX express lanes because I have an OK ‘Pikepass’. I consider that a huge benefit.

I like ID Nav, mainly because HUD map is great.
The route calculation has much improved since update in last year. I think they do now a calculation in a cloud instead in the car and I didn't find any issues so far. Definitely removed idea of taking exit and enter motorway again as faster option than going straight And it is easy to search location in a smartphone and send straight to the car.
