I was in the BMW showroom for G20 presentation and find out that the new 320d engine will be equipped with two turbos. Actually, they added one small turbo for better response in low range.

This is an American forum so you will only get tumbleweed in response to this message.
I noted that the economy went up again with this generation. So again with the tumbleweed. |

In context, a small number. It's an English language forum, and is dominated by people who have the easiest (i.e. cheapest) access to high-power-output, well-equipped BMWs around the world. As a rule, no-one here is interested in what BMW is, or does, in its home markets with "lower order" cars.

Also got to remember many BMW 3-series are company cars, "repmobiles" as we often term them over here. Tax advantages (BIK), based on CO2 emissions, "advantage diesel". The 4-pot diesels can save the user decent money each year, on tax alone. Petrol BMWs (particularly the bigger engines) are a limited buy over here. I run a 535i, as rare as hen's teeth. Never seen another F11 535i wagon in the 6+ years I've had mine. Most 5-series are 520d models, for the same reasons as the 3/4 series.. |

It’s quite simple for us in England! Sheer cost of fuel! When I was in Florida a few month back I paid around $2 per gallon in England we pay the equivalent of $8 per gallon so it all adds up!

Good point about diesel economy at high highway speeds. Regardless of the car, petrol economy seems to fall off sharply above 160-170 km/h whereas diesels in my limited experience are less affected. Diesels are not my cup of tea at all, but there's no denying their effectiveness at speed. Good thing too, because 50% of global 3 series production is the 320d. They simply can't get that wrong! |

An engine with the same peak power figures as an older single turbo engine, could easily be more powerful, faster, and have a broader torque curve with a sequential turbo setup. Peak horsepower is a very one dimensional measure of engine power. The difference a dual turbo setup could give might not be immediately obvious in the peak power figures.

Having done so many times, (E9x model forward), believe me, most would opt for the AT out of choice. The 20d works so much better attached to the AT. Can be very thrashy in MT form, particularly starting off, accelerating through the gears. AT gives the more refined drivetrain. The 30d engines are much more refined, but still favour the AT.
