Chicago Auto Show 2019

Looks like they will display one! Can't wait. Anyone know how to influence BMW to show at least both models in different colors?

On a side note, I assume dealers will start ordering their show room cars soon? Anyone know how to influence them which color combos to order or they pretty much get what BMW allocates to them?

Dealer order cars really depend. It could be that every dealer gets the exact same build for their first car... or, they get to order it how they wish.

I know with the new M5 my local dealer didn't spec a launch car for the showroom. They sold it straight out and let the new buyer build it how they wanted.

Just looked at show floor map - BMW is missing. Anyone know if they will exhibit or did they bow out?

This is sad news, I was planning a trip there also but it looks like BMW and Mercedes-Benz skipped Detroit and Chicago this year. Now I'm not sure if it's worth the trip.

Thanks for the find / link. My dealer confirmed as well that BMW opted out, he doesn't know why.

I am surprised as well that they are skipping the auto show. New X7, X5, Z4, 3 series, 8 series, …

Oh well, I am sure they will put all the money they save into incentives for my Z4

Many manufacturers are starting to skip auto shows for a couple of reasons:

1) The cost to attend is very high and the benefit received is very low. Many manufacturers are being more judicious with their marketing dollars and find other avenues more advantageous.
2) There are far too many auto shows worldwide. There are quite a few and only a few of them get their product in the spotlight.
3) Similar to the above, there are too many cars being introduced and showcased in the current environment making it difficult to get a spotlight on your car. This is why BMW chose Pebble Beach to do the introduction of the Z4 Concept and Z4 production models. No competition and they get a lot more press out of it than if they had chosen another venue.

These challenges and others are well documented in the auto industry. Beyond the weather issue, this is why Detroit is moving their auto show to June of next year and changing the vibe and feel of the show at the same time. They are basically rebranding it.

The Chicago Auto Show isn't typically the place to introduce new models. It's really a show to generate sales leads and for consumers to look at cars without sales people being all over them.

Many really just have a 'reception area' and just the space to display the cars, no elaborate stages and displays. Others do have more fancy displays or test tracks.

But yes, I get it, it's expensive.
