Warning: Rant coming....
This is really sad. I wonder what the 3D development team was thinking when they signed off on this mess. Putting out garbage to meet a deadline with the notion that they can fix it in a future release is so shortsighted. Any level of testing would have caught this mess and should have caused somebody to say, this isn't good enough, fix it. We shouldn't have to be BMW's quality control department. I get that they are pressed for deadlines and they have many features and functions to build, test, and launch. But the kinds of nickel and dime issues being reported by new G05 owners should be embarassing to BMW leadership. I think this ready-fire-aim mentality actually takes more time and costs BMW more money than if they took a breath and developed a culture of getting it right the first time. I know that the G05 is a new model and we should expect a few glitches. But BMW shouldn't settle for using that as an excuse. I can only image the conversation in the meeting room when they were disccussing the readiness of the 3D image: First guy says, "Yes, I think this thing is ready to launch. The image quality looks great and this will really help our customer see the environment around his car." Second guy says, "wait, the car next to the G05 is way too large. Its like 5 times bigger than it should be. We should find out why and fix it now." First guy says, "I hear what you are saying but we have a deadline to meet. We can fix it in a future release. Its not a safefy issue or anything. I need to check this off and meet my deadline." rant over. Sorry! |

It would be great to get Connected Drive App actually connected... my guess is, once you do that, the option to enable 3D view in the App will appear in the iDrive menu... Last edited by lumpydog; 12-24-2018 at 09:04 AM.. Reason: typos |

Hopefully the rendering/stitching can be improved. Tip, you can see the raw image from each of the four cameras by tapping on the address bar above the rendering. It gives you the option to view left, right, back and front images.

One thing to think of is the physical limitations of the cameras capturing the images. The side cameras are on the mirrors pointed downward, so there is only so much that they can capture up high close to the vehicle. Even though this causes distortion for another vehicle parked close to the side, I still think the rendering of the image real-time in the 3D views is pretty amazing.

If you go into gallery in the app, and tap "View Details", you will see that a total of 4 images (front, back, left, right) are captured each time a 3D view is rendered. Apparently the images are captured with ultra wide-angle fisheye lenses, and a side-effect of being able to capture such wide angles is visible distortion of the image.
What 3D view in the app does is that it "flattens" and stitches the 4 images together. From an image processing standpoint, converting these images to the correct apparent dimension is really quite difficult, not to mention that the view angle (from the user's perspective) can change arbitrarily. Judging from the final product (the 360 degree view), I would argue that BMW actually did a pretty admirable job there. |

Perhaps, although I tried it at various locations around town. It's getting stuck at this first step
