IND engine cooler guard installed

Thank you again to Ben at RG Sport for the amazing customer service. He installed the IND engine cooler and fixed a very bad rattle from the rear shelf.

My engine cooler is now protected but I'm sure I'll somehow find a way to damage it knowing my luck. I will say that Ben found a bunch of missing screws and trim pieces missing from when BMW did the engine swap.

And BMW wonders why the resale value of their M cars are so low.

I may be missing something here but don't see how this oil cooler guard really provides much protection over stock? There is a still a lot of the oil cooler still exposed.

@Quickburn7 , thank you for the kind words.

F90POWER , it is an upgrade compared to the OEM.
OEM is plastic and rubber combination piece to cover the oil cooler.
I said cover, since its function is only to cover, not to protect.
While the Fall-Line Motorsports oil cooler guard, is a guard to protect the oil cooler from low laying debris on the road.
It made out of heavy gauge stainless steel, I would say it is about 5mm thick.
Fitment was perfect, fit like a glove.
Installation is a little involving since you will need to modify the original cover and some of the OEM pieces.

Here are the pictures that I took.

Wouldn't work better with some type mesh in the spaces? The spaces still look like a rock could jump up and hit the cooler.

Wouldnt it work better as a solid piece with no gaps? To me that piece only protects where the bars are and clearly a sharp object can still easily get in there. (as mentioned)

Why don’t they just put plywood under there and cover the whole cooler so no air can get in??!!

You could duct tape your mother in law over it.

It still needs cooling for the engine oil. It's a very good design and will protect the cooler 200% more than stock. I don't think people understand how exposed and vulnerable the engine cooler is. The IND setup at least helps protect it.
Ben and I were looking and there are A LOT of areas where this cooler could've been installed but only one area that is exposed and that's where they put it. I think, although this is not a full 100% guard, it will stop a big percentage of debris or even curbs to puncture the cooler. My insurance wouldn't have paid $56k and my car would not have been out of service 8 weeks if this guard was stock.

Shelf was not reinstalled properly when the lowering springs were installed. It took r33_RGSport 10 minutes to locate and fix the rattle. It was driving me mad!!

Why not add some type of mesh in the open spaces? That would permit airflow but stop rocks or sticks from flying up in there..

Vic is eluding to what I was getting at in my comment. While it might be an “upgrade” over OEM and while fitment might be perfect, it doesn’t seem like it accomplishes what it was set out to do in the first place which is to give full protection to the oil cooler. Seems like it should have had a full mesh screen across preventing rocks and other debris from getting into the oil cooler at high speeds like the above post also mentions? Perhaps the thought process was a full screen would restrict airflow and would not allow oil cooler two cool properly?

I guess their thinking was that at those speeds a sharp object would get through a mesh regardless right? I'm not aware of what did in the original poster's oil cooler/engine (outside of the car being on job sites) but I don't see how much more protection is needed without compromising oil temps. Unless you are driving in basically off road conditions or if you are going through a storm and cannot avoid debris I do not see the benefit. From the looks of the underneath of the front bumper it would probably be a good idea to have something better suited for job site terrain but I can't really blame them for wanting to drive this thing everywhere

Yes, you will need to cut the original cover and drill a few holes.

The F80/82 board has at least one long thread on this - same design and solutions. I would have thought BMW would have this redesigned for the F90.
