An annoying tap that grinds my gears

So yeah. I mentioned in my other post this issue that I've been having. I have been under the assumption that it's most likely a lifter , as once the car's hot and been driven abit , it quiets down. Not always , but most of the time it calms down abit. This video here shows what it's like 99% of the time on cold starts.

It's been around since before my new turbos. You guys know what n54's sound like tho , they tick. They tap... they knock , they do all kinds of things , if they didn't that's when I'd think something it's wrong lol.

But this tap is most definitely not needed. I'm willing to do pretty much anything to remove this pesky little demon of a tap. It is in tune with the Rpms and tends to quiet down after you pull off. But at idle presents it's evil again and again. The question here isn't how to fix it , yet , just to help kinda pinpoint it. I'm sure you guys have heard this one before lol.

Please and thank you

I have the exact same noise 2011 335is with 62k miles. Pretty sure it's just something to live with.

Same here... Small tick on warmup. Raise RPM to 1200, it goes away. Otherwise stops after oil gets to about 120F.

Earlier this year I updated the VANOS oil sealing rings to the Teflon ones and while I was in there I inspected all the lifters/rollers and cams. All looked great, no abnormal wear of any kind.

I used to use Rotella 5W-40. Changed to Mobil 0W-40. Tick definitely goes away faster now that its on 0W-40.

What oil are you using?

Mine has been ticking/taping/clicking since 10k miles, now at 90k still going strong.

The only tick that caused a concern was a LOUD clanking noise at idle that would disappear when you blip the throttle. Dealer replaced boost solenoid which resolved the issue. Many people live with loud solenoids that still hold boost and throw no codes. It's all over the forums.

Mine does the same and has done since I bought it at 82k. Its on 161k now. Had a full new set of injectors, coils a couple of sets, plugs a couple of sets, still ticks on idle.

Tappits?

Dude, that definitely sounds like a dirty air filter and a burnt out reverse light bulb. It's terrible, I've never heard any healthy N54 make that exact same noise. Your only course of action at this point is to rip that POS shit out and replace with an LS.
