What's with the boring ext. colors BMW?

How about a metallic Matador red, or a classy Champagne?

I believe we get Ametrin Metallic which is red as an individual option but yes I agree the colors are really boring.

Ametrin is purplish. Ametrin + ivory white merino wouldn't be boring.

Fer sure. Lexus has a really good looking Matador red. What I find kinda crazy is the infatuation the Texas dealers have with black. A black exterior is the last thing any smart person needs in Texas, especially south Texas. Works for Michigan or Germany, not here.

Same in Florida; dealer lots are full of Black on Black cars ("Teutonic Coal Bins" as they were referred to in past).

Dealers tell me that's what customers want!

Bottom line...the "boring" neutral whites, blacks and grays sell.

Well, when you have no other choice, I guess they do.

I hear the same crap from sales advisers. Put a customer in a black car in south Texas, wait a few months for the honeymoon to wear thin and ask them how things are working out fer them come the end of August.

BMW continues their new strategy of building the cars they want you to have not that you want.

I suppose everyone here could have ordered Sunstone Metallic X5's, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The black car in a hot climate climate argument is a little overstated. We live on the west coast of Florida and there are tons of black cars here. Just make sure you order the remote start and tint the windows!

Even in the Northeast, black, white and gray are the most common colors on the lot.

But my issue is not so much the external color, but the commonality in essentially pairing each color with a black interior.

Almost bought a Nautilus instead because it came in a red that my wife loved. Even Individual colors are very limited. Ended up going with the blue.

But at least the “black” leather is actually not black... more like charcoal which isn’t too bad.

Sunstone Metallic has the unavoidable flaw that I can’t be used with the Driving Assistance Plus Package. That means no adaptive cruise control among others. The color is too reflective and won’t let the system work properly. I am sure there are other colors that might do this like light metallic silver. BMW obviously knows this and it will effect their color choices.

Let's confuse ourselves with the facts

I get that BMW is pushing boring colors our way and has done so for a long time. When I went online to build the G05 and saw the paint color choices I thought WT* is this again. My wife calls them non-colors. She picked the Phytonic Blue 1) because she likes it and 2) there were no other choices that had any color other than shades of black and white. (Carbon Black I guess could be considered a very dark blue.)

So I was wondering what colors people are buying from all makers and also in different countries. Here is what I found. It turns out that BMW is in fact making what people want to buy. Sad, but true.

Is BMW (and other car companies) making cars in colors that people want to buy, or are people buying cars in the colors that the companies are making? Chicken and the egg.

I bought Phytonic Blue -- in the F15, they didn't even offer a blue color (other than Carbon Black).

I agree the color choices are a bit limited. I wanted gray...but didn't care for the Artic Gray when I saw it in person.

I really liked the Dark Graphite but didn't want to wait until April 2019 so I just went with Sapphire Black.

The 3 series is a car that has at least had some color choices over the years. Cars.com allows you see the cars available for sale by color. Yes there are reds, browns, yellows, and other colors, but they are in very low numbers compared to white, black, silver, and gray. It turns out that even when offered other colors, it seems like BMW buyers choose the "boring" colors anyway. With this information, what color cars would you be building? I think BMW and other car companies are offering what people want to buy.

My current car is a AW 3er. It came in a beautiful red color and I almost went for it. Then I thought, the red is nice but its too much for every day and I'd rather just see it on other peoples' cars. So, I chose Alpine White. So, I'm as guilty as anybody I suppose in forcing car companies into offering boring colors.

Anyway, here are the colors of the used 3ers available on cars.com by color:

Black (5479)
White (4311)
Gray (3042)
Blue (2191)
Silver (2402)
Red (778)
Beige (122)
Brown (195)
Gold (109)
Green (82)
Orange (71)
Purple (4)
Yellow (17)

They offered imperial blue on the F15, but it was a very dark blue.
