Do I have wireless charging?

Does anyone know what this is for? I thought it was wireless charging but when I place my iPhone, I get apple pay?

You may have wireless charging. You will see a blue light to the left of your iPhone indicating it’s charging if you have a wireless charge capability - also there will be a battery icon on the tray. Apple Pay is triggered by the X5's NFC capability (for digital key use) - and is a known bug/issue that should be resolved in the future by BMW and/or Apple, in a software update. Until then, you can prevent The Apple Pay bug in the short term by removing your payment credits cards from your Apple wallet.

Be sure to try searching before posting - you’ll find a lot of good information here!

Does anyone have issues actually charging the phone? I have a iPhone XR and it doesn't seem to charge...

if you dont have wireless charging then that is the nfc area to program the card key and hopefully soon your phone so you can use it to unlock you car.

Just because you have that pad, doesn’t necessarily mean that you have wireless charging. I believe you needed to purchase the “premium tier” in order to have wireless charging.

That is just the NFC receiver for the digital key. Premium tier gets the actual wireless charger.

You are right. I guess it's not a standard option.

Thanks!

Oooo - yup. I was equating the NFC issue being present with the charger being present. But forgot they can be mutually exclusive. As Jay shows. Some pads are NFC only, with no wireless charge capability.

Existence of NFC spot (for digital key) does not = existence of wireless charger!

Sorry for the confusion! I corrected my earlier post.

I wonder if this is software or is the hardware different? If every car has the key port then maybe it can be updated with software to wireless charging? I have wireless charging but am just sharing a thought.

I am sure it is a hardware component as well.

I had this same thought. If there isn't hardware difference maybe it could be coded. It could be just a different cover.

It would be interesting, it is a different part, but is not as much as the option itself costs - $250 for the replacement part with NFC and charging - would be relatively cheap if it was just a hardware swap out and nothing like coding needed, but might need to add the option to VO to get it to work.

Does that include the LTE repeater system? I thought that was only installed if you got the package with the charging.

LTE repeater is an additional part in the link, another 300 bucks, doubt you need it to enable charging, but unsure.

This string is very interesting. Like RJC, I thought wireless charging was standard, but then discovered it was part of the premium package (the same day my vehicle went into production!) I contacted my CA (who also thought it was standard), and asked him if they could add the package at the factory but it was too late, of course, because it was already on the line and in production. I then asked if it could be retro-fitted at the dealership, and was told no- because it is "all wire harnessing".

RoadKill posts some very good evidence that this might be able to be changed post delivery. Does anyone have any experience (good/bad) with making such a retro-fit?

Do people like the wireless charging feature? (Speaking to just the charging functionality/effectiveness, not the well-posted Apple Pay issues). I use a case that holds a few credit cards in the back, and my research into wireless charging leads me to believe that such a set up might not work with wireless charging.

Thank you!

You are correct that the credit cards would more than likely interfere. Go into any Apple store and try it - they usually have wireless chargers out.

I'm guessing you may be able to do a swap in of that part but it would take some careful prying. Then - you would have to hope that the correct unused leads were available in the wiring harness. This is actually likely based on what I've seen so far. I've taken a few panels off (both trunk and the under steering wheel panel) and found unused leads and sockets. Makes me think you have a chance at finding the same under the wireless charger...

Great advice. Good to know that there could be some flexibility with the wiring. Will test out other wireless chargers first!

Unfortunately it's a bad idea to have credit cards between the phone and wireless charger.
Not necessarily an Apple article, but as you can see Samsung makes a statement about this
