G05 Navigation
How does the G05 handle serious navigation needs like finding your way through a large unknown city? In my 2013 X3 you get Google on your phone and stick it on the dashboard.
Sales rep says new navigation system takes acre of that, somehow I don't believe BMW has a system that can match Google. So, do you open Google or something else from within the navigation screen or break out the phone again, and are voice/lane diagrams a part of it? |

Google will always be better as will Google's Waze for a number of reasons. BMWs native navigation is pretty good, and much better than any stock system I've used. I don't use my phone for nav anymore but would if the car had Android Auto. I'm perfectly happy with how BMW does their nav even though I check longer routes with Google maps on my phone

Today it screwed me out of 45 minutes going to an address that it thought was 10 miles from the actual location had to resort to google to get there. Triple checked it and all was correct it just thinks the address is miles from the actual location, never had that happen in 5 bmw’s with nav!

It's much better than before. The voice integration is much better. I no longer input addresses manually which is very nice. The system changes the scale as you get close to a turn. The detail in the HUD is much improved. I've had google maps screw up my routes and BMW's nav. as well sometimes in bizarre ways but it's better than before and well integrated.

One can use Google Maps through CarPlay, but that does not show up in the HUD. I wonder where one would mount a phone in the G05 for whatever purpose?

I use phone navigation as a back up to onboard navigation. Doing lots of long road trips, the onboard nav has been very good on other vehicles. My limited testing with the X5 nav has it significantly better than any other onboard navigation. It’s so intuitive and works with the controls in your car like HUD, choosing lanes, factoring in toll booth lanes, traffic, etc...that I am looking foward to our upcoming 2200 mile trip. Unless a IDrive meltdown, I wouldnt consider ever using my phone as primary navigation compared to what the onboard system provides.

I’ve had a couple of issues here locally where BMW nav didn’t seem to know a couple of shortcut roads were the obvious choice to use, but getting through Atlanta in particular, BMW seems superior to Waze consistently. Love being able to just say “navigate to wherever” now and have it get it right seemingly every time versus the old clunky system. Also being able to send an address to your vehicle via the BMW connected app is pretty cool.

Even though Waze is owned by Google now, Google Maps has much better NAV algorithms. There were several instances where I did side-by-side comparisons and Waze often chose routes that were significantly longer, especially in heavy-traffic situations along non-highway suburban commute.
Edit - I don't have the BMW yet, so can't comment on its internal system. |

I'm typically a Waze user for the Police seeking feature, but I find myself using the new G05 Nav quite often because the voice input is so good! As long as it's not a foreign name like a Chinese restaurant, it works very well.
In addition, to have the detailed map in the HUD and lane guide is very helpful when you're in a new city. Highway, I'll still have Waze on CarPlay just for Police alerts. |

You can place your iPhone in the charging tray after putting Waze in the foreground and after swiping Apple Pay one can get audio alerts from Waze.
I haven to had a chance to try this, but it should be possible to add Escort Live in the background which will undergo a major revision Feb 1.
