Fan on after engine off

This is my first BMW so forgive me if this is an ignorant question. I've noticed that after driving my 50i and turning off the engine, the from grill is open and the engine fan runs for about 5 minutes. Is this normal? TIA

Very normal. Heat evacuation system. It’s very efficient. Sometimes I had my Porsche 911’s start up the fan over a minute after the vehicle was turned off. It would just kick on and run fas long as it felt it needed cooling. I suspect the BMW to do the same on hot days.

If you're driving it hard or it's hot the fan will stay on for a few min after shutting the engine off

We used to install turbo timers that would cool down the engine after driving. Seems BMW was smart and this is standard, to avoid cooking oil and causing failures.

I remember those days. Also lifting the hood right after you pulled in the garage to let heat escape.

Yep. Happens on any car, more on turbo cars.

My F10 M5 fan stays in for a while sometimes.
