Extended Traffic Jam Assist

Hi BMW people! My vehicle was purchased before extended traffic jam assist was implemented as part of the drive assistant pack. I reached out to our local genius, who is amazing btw, and got back a reply that a software update for this is in the works. She confirmed the hardware is the same, but I see others on the forum have already figure that out. They are also expecting the first major OTA update (which may or may not include this) to be released in March.

Curious if anyone else heard a similar message. Maybe one of our dealer members?

Just curious as I would love this extended feature... otherwise I feel like that camera is just starring at me all drive creepily....

BMW never confirmed that. It is a "posibility" at this point.

Thanks Jay! Thought you might reply :-)
Appreciate the feedback... sad, but I will accept it as a possibility for now. Hope they do, seems crummy to not do it for their early adopters of the new model.

While not out of the question, I seriously doubt that BMW will give you a feature that wasn't part of the car when it was built. This is more of a Tesla thing and in my 20+ years of owning BMWs, I have never seen them retrofit options that were not on the car from the factory.

Have you tried it below 37mph and it does not allow hands off driving? What happens? The small IR cameras near the speedometer also handle the Driver Attention Assistant, but it does also look for attention when using the adaptive cruise control. I've tested it when using Extended Traffic Jam assist and looked at my side windows, looked down (as one would do if texting) and it doesn't seem to alert of shut off as long as i put a hand on the steering wheel.

They have said that they could implement it as a "Paid upgrade" in the future. Driver Assist Pro allows unlimited hands off time under 37 mph on the highway (think traffic jams)

Thanks Jay! Seems lame as the new Pro is the same price as the Plus. Figured they may just have been waiting on some approvals or some other reason it was restricted given it is the same hardware. Not sure why else they would have not included it from the go. Oh well!

Pretty sure that is a massive hardware difference so if you didn't purchase the pack up-front you are out of luck. I believe the camera system, radars, and other things are drastically different from vehicles equipped with the DAP vs not. In the sticky for technical documentation you can see much of this and its an interesting read if you like that kind of stuff. :-)

Agreed. My guess is that it was withheld initially for certification or testing of some sort. Same cost between the two, ZDB and ZDY.

But then again, BMW feels compelled to charge us for CarPlay...
