Someone sell me on buying a 1m

Been lurking for a while now. Worked on bmws out of high school, and the 1 series was always one of my favorites to get my hands on. Never had the chance to drive a 1m but I’m frothing. I wanna do something special for my 25th birthday coming up here and I’m in high debate about getting one. I can afford a higher mileage model and I plan to drive it. Some one convince me! Haha

Convince you? Nah. There are plenty of videos and opinions and articles out there to do that already. If you're not convinced after driving one; it's not for you. Go drive one...

What other cars have you owned? Do you prefer torque down low (2000-5000) or up high (4000-8000rpm)? If the latter, buy an E46 M3 or any other M car with the S54 in it. If you prefer the lower rpm torque of a turbo'd engine (I do), the 1M is hard to beat.

Another option - test drive a nice 135 and see if you "need" the extra performance and tuning that the 1M gives you. The 135 is supposedly a great car for the money. At 25 you might want to pocket the difference - so that some day you will be able to afford a low mileage 1M

Yeah it’s questionable if I really need to go all out and get a 1m. But currently local to me is a 2011 bsm 135i stripper with a coral interior. Has the n55 which I’m ok with. Has About 85k on it and is in great shape. Well taken care of. Might scope that maybe.

Young man, get the 135i and buy a house or invest the rest. There are stages in life for everything and while you might be well off today that is no guarantee of being well off in the future. The 135i or even a 128i are very cool cars you can get for under 15K that will bring you 90% of the enjoyment and at 1/3 to 1/4th the cost.

Additionally, you are asking to be convinced to buy a 1M and the 1M goodness will really manifest itself to those that understand and appreciate it. It is all subjective stuff is only worth it if it really matters to YOU.

If you need convincing, then it's not worth it and at this stage in your life invest the money for a rainy day and get something fun for less.

I hope that helps.

Well you could listen to that guy and invest your money, or if you're already on the path to a skill set that will land you a nice salary and you don't give a shit "i'd get the 1m". Slight warning however... the car won't be cheap in any sense when you consider gas, repair and maintenance.

I drive a 135i DCT auto every day and wouldn't trade that for any other car other than a 1m.

Enjoy life bud, the car comes with a pussy magnet.

All input appreciated thanks guys! I’ve had a lot of cars over the last 5 years or so. I was very into Subaru’s for quite a long time, so my first Subaru was a 2000 4 door 2.5rs 5 speed. Great car loved it. And a fair few others that I’d buy and sell as I fixed them and what not. Had a saabaru as well for about a year. Currently I have a Black 2007 328xi e91 6 speed stripper. Also another bmw I really loved when they came through occasionally at the shop I worked at. I always told my self if one appeared local to me I’d jump on it. That day happend and I went for it! It’s been great ever since.

Just split the difference and get the 135i and budget another $5K-$10K on easy mods (MHD tune, M3 suspension arms, M3 front sway, new shocks/coil-overs, bolt-ons, rear subframe bushings, tires, LSD etc.) You'll end up with a very capable car for around $20K-25K.

Granted, I'd probably look for a 135i with half that mileage, and that wouldn't be too much more expensive.

YOLO. Get a 135, you'll be spending $$$ to make it feel like a 1M. I'd go the 1M route to enjoy your youth while you're young and not wait till other life's responsibilities come into the mix.

I think that's controversial advice for a 25 year old, when a higher mileage 1M would cost something like $40K+ more than a 135i, and putting $5K-10K into the 135i would be beastly vs. a stock 1M.

The 1M was a no-brainer when new, and it would probably still be worth it if a used one was only $15K more than a used 135i, but you're certainly paying the collector's tax for it now at 4x the price, and I'm not sure that's wise for the OP.

I mean, for the price of a 1M, the OP could buy a 135i, mod it, and then add a 60K mile one of these on top of it.

While I would agree with you on that one, and am prudent like yourself and several others, the man asked for convincing. I tried to deliver.
