Hood Temperature after driving - Thermal in Florida

Hello all! I just purchased a 2018 BMW M2 and had some questions about heat and the M2. I noted the hood does not have insulation - why is that?

Also, it would seem that the hood remains quite warm for a long period time even after not using the car (it is in my garage). I don’t know what normal is but I wanted to check if others experience what the hood temperature should be. Please keep in mind I am only driving on city streets and in comfort mode.

As a resident of Florida, I am curious if what I am experiencing is typical or if there is a potential overheat issue. Should I be looking at the temp gauges to see if there’s an issue? Thanks all!

People track these cars pretty hard with the stock hood, haven't seen any reports of overheating due to that. I'm pretty sure normal driving in sub tropical weather will be fine.

Sport and Sport+ should cool the car more aggressively.

Wouldn't insulation make it worse? I figure a metal hood would allow heat to be exchanged faster, as opposed to a insulated hood that would keep the heat inside.

Hood Temperature after driving - Thermal in Florida

And to add something useful to the thread...I have a 92 Eclipse with an exhaust manifold that is about a half inch or less away from the uninsulated hood and the paint is browning from the underside and I can see cracks in the paint from the top side. The manifold sees temps in excess of 1300F. Our M2s get hot, but it would have to get significantly hotter to do damage to the paint, I am guessing.

OP, My M2, when I had it, was similar in the hood being warm after cooling down in the garage, it is not an issue IMO. Just a characteristic of this car.

Hood insulation is to quiet an engine or help it maintain temps. Your track ready car does not need that.

Depending on who you talk to it can be for sound deadening, thermal insulation, or fire suppression. I haven't looked under the big plastic engine cover to see if it has any insulation buy my wife's Outback engine cover has the insulation under it.

There is an extruded foam insulation under the engine cover...it costs CAD $225. I know this because I was going to buy a new one for my CF engine cover to protect the custom paint and CF finish...ended up just scavenging it and the rubber grommets from the OEM cover.

After hard driving my hood gets pretty warm, but not so hot that it gets uncomfortable to hold a hand to it over along period of time, but getting to that point. There shouldn't be an overheat issue as there is alot of airflow when the car is moving, just when it is idling the underhood temps rise. If you're tracking when you stop the car open the hood to let it vent and keep it idling for awhile before you shut it off to let oil temps drop first and allow the turbos to cool and not cook the oil inside.

Lol send some of that Florida heat up to canada, some parts of canada was getting down to -50C with the windchill.
