Tires: Reviews and Feedback

It is my understanding that in the 20" size, 3 different tires are being installed at the Assembly Plant:

CROSSCONTACT LX SPORT SSR
SCORPION ZERO ALL SEASON RUN FLAT
BRIDGESTONE ALENZA SPORT A/S RFT

I realize the customer has no control over which tire is installed on his/her car if it is an ordered car.

I would be interested in feedback from those that have had their vehicles for several months and have driven in various weather conditions. I'm only interested in the OEM tires not any winter tires that are being used. Thanks.

Bridgestones are awful as are the Continentals, I can't speak for those particular Pirellis but none would be ideal.

I agree. I have the Continental DWS06s on my Corvette and my wife's Lexus RX. Overall, pretty happy. They perform well in all weather conditions including light snow. Price not being a factor, I would choose the Michelin AS3+ ZP All Season if we had a choice but alas that is not an option.

This is a really interesting thread to me. I grew up with my family owning a chain of tire dealerships. From as far as I can remember it was drilled into me that "even the best car will only perform as well as the tires will let it". I'm the guy who gets a new vehicle and the next day goes out and buys 2 new sets (snows and summers) and ends up having at least 3 sets for each vehicle. I am the worst picky person when it comes to tires, and have no problem dumping tires even if they're new but I just don't like my choice.

That said, when I picked up my G05, it was during the holidays and I never got around to figuring out what I think will be the "best for me" on this vehicle.

Mine came with the Bridgestone ALENZA SPORT A/S RFT, and I have to say I do not hate them. I've had every "season" thrown at me in this short time and they've handled everything from 7" of snow, flooded roads, black ice, extreme cold and 60 degree temps like champs. They also hold corners very well, they're quiet, and they give a nice ride. I'm surprisingly impressed by them.

I know I'll switch them out, cause that's what I do, but until I find what I think I want, I am not in my usual hurry.

Pirelli's here. My first set of run flats so can't really compare them to any other brands. Any way you can you add a poll to this post? I would be curious to see the distribution curve.

My 40i with OEM 21" wheels came with Pirelli RFT. They are fine in the dry and wet....but absolutely dreadful in the cold and snow.

Are they... summer tires? AKA 3 season? That would be every season but winter.

Summer tires, i.e. not all season or winter tires, are notoriously bad in temps below about 40 degrees F.

My 50i M sport came with the Bridgestone Alenza on 20" wheels. I figured with it being winter, I'd buy the car this way and potentially buy larger wheels for the summer. Unfortunately, the only option for all season tires was on the 20 inch wheel.

I was worried about the Bridgestones but so far have to say I'm impressed. Very comfortable ride, and they have handled cold, snow and rain very well. My guess is that I'll be looking for a firmer ride in summer, but they are really nice for now.

I will use them for the rest of this winter at least, and decide next winter whether I need proper snow tires or not.

Hope this helps..

These tires have 2 things going against them - all season and Run flat. so it limits us to 130 MPH and limits performance in winter and summer to different extent.

If you are building a car - choose performance tire if you can - you get better summer tires and 155 MPH limit. Choose non run flat to maximize performance and in any scenario order a spare for $150. If you live in snow belt - get a set of winter wheels and tires in 20" and you are all set.

But if you buy from dealer - you have no choice. Among the 3 (mentioned by OP) - I feel like Bridgestones give best snow performance and so so noise and summer. Continentals are quieter and have better summer dry/wet performance but suck in the snow.
I ended up with Continentals and immediately got snows (Pilot Alpine 5 SUV) since the first ice storm made me slide and drift all over the highway. But in the dry i was able to push the car pretty hard and they performed - so for me the sacrifice in the summer is less then winter - I will be using them in the summer till they die.

Question is - what is best summer performance tire to replace them with?
Michelin Latitude sport 3? Michelin Diamaris? Eagle F1 SUV?

The Pirellis are the best of the bunch. As another person said, they are decent on dry and wet pavement. Still too harsh for me but much better than others.

They are bad on snow, just slid around on them yesterday. DWS 06, Michelin premier LTX and a few other non run flats are much better.

I have to ask, were you worried about Bridgestone because of that Bridgestone/Ford Explorer thing years ago? If you were I have some very reliable inside information that the blame was placed completely on the wrong company in the beginning there, so if that's the reason, you can rest easy.

I'm hoping for the Bridgestone or the Pirelli. The conti's that came on my 340i rode so awful I replaced them before 10k miles. We also had defective conti's on a previous SUV. I've got no love for them.

reviving this old thread. Just took delivery of my 24 X5 and it came with Bridgestones (20s A/S runflat). From my past experience in other cars, Bridgestone tires suck! they are loud and make the ride harsh compared to Michelin for example. On my X5 after driving it for about 100 miles, they are not as terrible as my past experience but I wonder if changing them will yield less noise and more comfort.

Couldn't find a road test result for the Bridgestones on TireRack but among the ones tested that fit my X5, Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 stands out in terms of ride quality and noise. Then it is the Michelin CrossClimate2. I wonder if anyone has gone from Bridgestone to either of these two or other tires and notice improvements?

Thanks! This is another review from a few days ago: https://www.autoguide.com/Pirelli-Sc...ng-Tire-Review

Everyone praises how quiet this tire is. Still torn between this and the Michelin

Looks interesting but no availability in 21" so far. Drat! Hoping Tire Reviews comes up with a test soon.
