Blew stock oil cooler oil line drove the car with no oil

So I was driving home on the freeway and the car threw a code for vanos low pressure. I thought nothing of it and when I got home and pulled into my garage the car was shacking and I heard rod knock. I popped the hood and the whole engine bay was covered in oil. The stock oil cooler like had a hole and was squirting oil 10+ feet in the front of the car as soo. As I opened the hood. The whole engine bay is completely drenched in oil. I jacked up the car and drained the oil and almost no oil came out!!! I’m talking like less than 1 quart of oil cane out of the engine.

What are the chances I’m going to need another engine?

That's one of the bad thing about our cars. The check engine light comes on for so many minor issues, when a big problem happens you think its nothing.
All you you can do is fix the leak, fill with oil and prey for the best. Good luck.

If you saved the last quart you could send it to Blackstone for analysis. Also, look at your oil filter. If there are a bunch of tiny shiny pieces of metal then it's a very bad sign.

But wouldn't the low oil warning come on rather quickly to let you know your oil is dangerously low?

How far did you drive since the code came on?

The fact that the oil was shooting 10 ft in front of you car when you got home means you still had oil left in there.

In addition to checking the filter and the qrt for shavings I would fix leak, put oil and see what happens. I mean whats the worst at this point? How far you think you drove though?

Is it worth it to preventatively replace these lines, at say the 100k mark?

Sure why not. What other things are you going to?
Funny story i guess, my rms seems to be blown. Just 138k mi. Like the op i get vanos fking code before anything to do w oil level or pressure. Half engine light comes on. Ok i keep driving because i got the vanos code in the morning and im just trying to get home after work 10mi. Then comes the low oil pressure warning. What? I get home there is barely 2-3 liter oil. My rms is blwn and leaking away.
Sorry i digress lol. Stupid vanos code overrides low oil pressure.

Why 100k? How is 100k relevant? Is 5y 100k same with 10y 100k or 10y 50k, Floroda and Wisconsin? Which is most likely to fail. These oil lines usually show oil wetness at the cramp before they blew. All oil lines. Not just BMWs. I would look for sign as that. Or dry rot. Not mileage.

best thing to do say after about 6yrs old, get rid of the under body trays and spend some time with it on a lift relatively often.. you're much more likely to see what needs attention that way. And when it comes to loosing oil, that's kind of a biggy..
