DME shut off cyl #6, but won't turn it back on.

While driving the other day I had codes of injector input errors, etc. on cyl. #6 and I would use my JB4 to clear the error and the car would run fine, but after 2-10 minutes the stumble would come back and the error would come back. I parked when I got home and yesterday I started it up and it was only on 5 cylinders. I shut it off, pulled coil pack #6 and there was fresh water in the spark plug hole. Probably when I washed the engine last week or maybe when I had the covers off, etc. (I did just swap in this engine and have had covers off at different times. I used a paper towel and long screw driver and soaked up all the water out of the cylinder and even swapped over the coil pack from another cylinder to maker sure I didn't fry a coil pack. Now the car still has a constant misfire on #6 and if you clear it, it come back instantly. It seems as of the DME shut off injector pulse to cyl. #6 as a safety measure (that's good). But now I have a dry coil pack and plug and it seems as if it is not turning in back on. Any way to clear the error and have the DME give #6 a fresh start?

Probably is bad MoFSeT resistor that drives injector 6.

Hopefully not but if that's the case I'll just open it up and change the mosfet. I do have a spare DME on my spare engine if I need to do testing. I'm going to test for voltage at the injector plug first in a few minutes.

UPDATE: I used my stethoscope and could hear that injector #6 is dead. If I clear the code in JB4 I can hear the DME start up the injector for about 2-3 seconds (and it does not have a "sharp" ping like the others), then the DME shuts it off again and throws the "Injector valve cylinder 6, input signal" code again. I then swapped injector plugs from #5 and #6 and sure enough the same thing happens but now the DME thinks it is injector #5 with bad input signal and kills it too. So I am sure my DME is fine but this injector is probably partially mechanically jammed or the coil is out of impedance specs. Either way, I need to get another one. The problem is I have index 2 and 7 injectors so I can't just drop one index 12 in there so I went ahead and ordered a used one from eBay until I find a decent deal on a set of newer ones. I will update with my findings when I drop another injector in there after Mardi Gras next week.

I have two index 1 in good order and maybe index 5 or 7. You want me to check?

I already ordered a cheap one from eBay but if it tests bad I will definitely let you know.

I just replaced the injector tonight with a used $35 index 9 from eBay. The car runs strong and has never felt more powerful. I guess my injector just crapped out. The best tool I have bought for this car is a cheap mechanics stethoscope. You can distinctly hear when an injector is working or not, etc.

Yeah, I think the index 2 I replaced must have an internal jam or the piezo is shorting out. I was getting an injector input signal error and the DME kept shutting it off after about 2 seconds. I would love to just get a new set of 6 but they are as high as giraffe nuts.

Speaking of index 9. I don't doubt you are right, but I am curious. How do you know they are more prone to failure? Also, I wonder if that is connected to why most used or supposedly "rebuilt" injectors for sale are index 9 in the photos. Maybe the index 9's were recalled and sold off in bulk by BMW to people that clean and resell them? I am just spit-balling theories.

I have replaced many injectors but majority was index 9 injectors that were originally replaced by BMW during recall on HPFP. At least most of them were. I have also replaced failed index 12 on my own n54 that are said to be the best. You theory might be valid. I suspect the same myself.

Hmmm, interesting. Wasn't it you who said that index 2 are more dependable?

Index 2 ? I haven't seen index 2. Index 1 is pretty good.
