Runflat worries on Midwest roads?
Potholes, frost heaves & uneven surfaces are a given in the whole area I typically drive in-- what is your real world experience with survivability of runflats? Being left with a damaged tire & likely no close by replacement seems like a possible deal breaker. Thoughts??

Go with the spare tire option.
This is my first experience with run flats too, and the spare tire option helps with peace of mind. Heck, I’ve yet to own a car without a spare tire, so I’m not starting with BMW. |

Runflats are horrendous on anything. They bubble easily and arent repairable and create more ride harshness/vibration, slide more in snow and ice, etc. I can go on and on. Swap for non-runflats and you will be happier. I have a 2015 X5 and 75k miles and non runflat Michelin all seasons for spring to fall and winter Blizzaks on separate rims for winter time and not 1 flat tire. I find that runflats are more prone to getting a puncture in my experience.. We also have a spare which is convenient if anything happens.

I'm waiting for my 40i with 3rd row to arrive in a few weeks. I'm new to the run flat tires and I've always had a spare which concerns me. Since because of the 3rd row the spare wasn't an option, are runflats my only option from now on or is there some kind of kit I can use with non runflats that are effective for certain situations? I'd appreciate if anyone that's had experience with a similar situation could provide feedback from their experiences.

I had/have run flats on my e70 and e90 for 10 years in Minnesota winters and never had a problem. Infact, they probably saved my wife and I's life when something made it a hole big enough I could put a few fingers in while doing 70 on the freeway. Was still able to control the car and drive it to an exit so could change to spare in a safe area. Can only imagine what might have happened with regular tires. I know popular opinion is to hate them, but I feel better knowing if my wife has a flat she'll be able to drive somewhere safe if need be. Still get the spare. For $150 why wouldn't you?
