iirc only 6% of accidents are caused by excess speed - actual accidents caused by going quicker than the posted speed limit is much less than this.
The biggest cause of accidents (>40%) is caused by not driving with due care and attention. The next biggest is dangerous driving. limiting the speed promotes the latter issues and doesn't address root cause - but that would cost real money through training etc. given my tuner can remove egr, delimiters, swirl flaps and give me an extra 50 horses, removing this type of sh*t will be easy - explaining it to the insurer would be a different matter. btw I have telematics on my golf. it's very easy to get to the point of insurance cancellation through Time of day, short/long trips, excessive braking/accelerating and of course speeding based on gps. Thin end of the wedge. |

Reading this article makes me glad I’m old and will be dead soon.

I suggest you read the article. Then show me where it talks about 130mph?

Building cars with automated speed limiting / control devices is another preparatory step before self driving technology gains a wider acceptance. Imagine a highway in the future where certain lanes are dedicated to self driving cars. When a vehicle enters this lane, sensors (integrated in the signs above?) will ask the vehicle to activate self driving controls and comply with the speed limits dictated by the sensors and traffic flow. It's only a matter of when not if.

Practically speaking this would only work on expressways, but even then, not very well.
I don’t imagine US consumers taking kindly to such nannies in their cars. Self-driving cars won’t happen for a long time. A loooong time. |

I hope it's correct to say Self driving cars are a long way off but speed limiting cars are apparently very near, coming to the UE in 2022 if the article is correct. The system is both optical and GPS based so it can work anywhere, it simply reads the speed limit sign's combined with what ever data about a specific GPS location the designers choose to program into the system and then limit's your speed accordingly. Our cars have enough nannies on them already to take away much of the driving experience, I just don't want to lose anymore of the reasons I love to drive.

Just like everywhere else this is reported, they bury the fact that this system is defeatable. There will be a button to disable the speed limiter, though you have to press it every time you start the car like Sport mode.
Even without disabling the system, if you press your foot down, the car will speed up for passing maneuvers. Anything else would be dangerous. It sounds very similar to BMW's "limiter" function that most European BMWs have. Just on by default and speed set automatically by GPS. |
