Water Pump
Hi everyone, my 1M left me on the side of the road for the first time two days ago, due to water pump failure.
I was 2 km from home when the amber engine overheat warning appeared. While wondering if I could limp the rest of the way home, the red warning came on five seconds later. I promptly pulled over and shut down. There was coolant in expansion tank area, and in right front wheel well. I had it flat decked home, then flat decked to the dealer the next day. When the codes and faults were checked, there was "coolant pump sticking" and "coolant pump shut down" faults. The pump is worth $800 Canadian in case you're wondering. Yikes. Here's a few pictures:

How many miles?
I have seen 60k as a recommended replacement mileage even with no problems for this very reason. I will likely do it next winter when I expect to be close to 55k since I track the car.

My car has north of 143000 km. Service adviser said very common. He said common pump assembly for N54, N55 engines. I suspect other engines as well. Had the pump in stock, and mentioned that's because they frequently pack it in at this age, or earlier.
The impeller and housing are made of plastic, hence why it wears. I kept the old pump. Maybe I'll make a disassembly video.

Mine lasted 166,000 miles before giving it up.

On my N55 135i, the water pump, OFHG and charge pipe all went out between 40k-44k miles. Bring on the HPFP!
On my Porsche 996, the water pump went out at about the same mileage, too! |
