E90 Differential

Hi everybody,

My BMW is one of those affected by a noisy diff.
I went to my mechanic but he says that he can't find a replacement.

I took a look, and I have to admit that I had some issues too.
Attached you can find a picture of the SN / Model of the part and I was wondering that maybe there is some compatible one that can fit?

I am no expert and I hope that you can help!

A bit of info about the car:
318i 2006, 2L.

Please let me know what do you think!

Cheers

Look for a diff rebuild kit online. The process is very simple and straightforward. Perhaps neilj35 can chime in with his experience, as I know he has done this and can speak to the simplicity of it.

Here is one option: https://www.bearingkits.co.uk/BMW-E9...IR-KIT/899.htm

I haven’t compared prices or anything else, so that might not be your best source in the end. But it should give you an idea.

If you don’t want to do this yourself, your mechanic should be able to do it for you.

I rebuilt my diff a while ago as i was struggling to find a reasonably priced one which was the same ratio as mine.
I bought a rebuild kit from ebay and did a post on how i rebuilt it. Here's the link to it. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...php?p=24350755

Your diff is a type 168 diff. Any 4 cyl diff will fit physically but you may have problems finding the correct ratio.

Have a read of my post. Your Mechanic may be able to rebuild yours for you.

Thank you for your answers!
The thing is Tha my mechanic has already said that he doesn't want to open this one and fix it. He'd rather replace it with another one - which I am ok with but I can't seem to find the one.

"Your diff is a type 168 diff. Any 4 cyl diff will fit physically but you may have problems finding the correct ratio"

What models would this be? I know the ratio I need.

Thank you againl

Maybe you should find another mechanic then. It's not a hard job. Or maybe take it to a specialist differential shop.
The only cars that have the same diff with the same ratio are 118i, 318i and 323i.
