Powder coating alloy silver

Hey y'all, I'm looking to have my OEM 225M wheels refinished (lots of rash) and powder coated alloy silver.

There's a seemingly endless number of silver options to choose from on the Prismatic site (link below), so I'm wondering if anyone has some experience here. I'd like to get as close to the OEM finish as possible, I'm currently between BMW Silver (duh), Porsche Silver and Silver Metallic II.

From what I've been told in the past by the stealership parts dept , there is no paint code for their OEM rims. Maybe try and find an OEM silver body paint code that you like and see if it can be matched in powder. Looking at colors online through a monitor can certainly be deceptive if the images are off, or your screen is not accurate or calibrated correctly.

You'd be best off going to a shop that does powder coating and comparing their samples to your wheels in person.

Agreed, going to the shop and checking samples is the best option. I just had my 216s coated Porsche silver. It's slightly darker than Decor Silver A55, but let's be honest, whatever color anyone's BMW rims start out as, they all end up brake dust brown.

<This. Now there's an idea waiting to take off..., Brake Dust Brown powder coat as a paint color. "You'll never have to wash your rims again!"

Lol. Do you know what clear coat was applied? Do you have any pics to share? In some images Porsche Silver looks lighter, but other pics show it as more grey. I think that's just the nature of powder vs paint.

The powder coating shop I have been working with on this is near by my work, so I might throw a wheel in the trunk and bring it over there tomorrow to see what they say.

You know, those 225Ms look really good in a grey, like Feric.

Ferric grey was my first thought, my buddy used to have a Space Grey E90 on 219Ms, the two shades of grey complimented each other very well. But after months of mulling over the decision, I think these wheels truly look best in alloy silver, it's such a clean look.

Thanks, appreciate it. I'm going to head to the powder shop tomorrow with my wheels, they have samples of both Porsche and BMW silver so that will really be the best test.

OK, I don't know what I was going on about, the Porsche Silver looked darker on my workbench, but it definitely appears lighter next to my stock rims. To me it appears to be a pretty close match to yours.

Yeah, I wanted something a little bit on the lighter side to contrast against the Space Grey. I dropped the wheels off this morning, I went with Porsche Silver so I will update this thread with some pics when I pick them up next Wednesday.

Thanks for the reminder! I just posted some pics here: Imgur Gallery

I was about 8/10 pleased with the finish, they came out a little too satin which from my understanding is an indicator that the wheels weren't prepped well before they were coated.

The powder coater also dropped one of the wheels and dented the shit out of it, they wouldn't take any accountability for it and kept saying it was like that when it was brought in. There was 0% chance that a tire would have held air on a wheel with that big of a dent, scumbags. The repair cost me a bit but they at least resprayed that one for free.

Which clear did you use? Double shot of same clear can look different as well.

If you had to do it again would you go with BMW silver which I think is lighter?

No I would stick with Porsche Silver, but I would go to a more competent powder coater. Shame on me really, I was about to leave with my wheels when the owner of the company had to use a calculator for multiplying 6x4. Talk about red flag..

Not that hard. It comes out to 73.5 in Common Core math.

You can get the M badges for $9 each on Tuner and other OE sellers like the forum sponsor Atlanta BMW.

Thanks, I've since installed the badges, I wanted to ceramic coat the wheels first.
