3-Stage Intake - Problems
I have also posted this in the engines forum but hoping to increase chance of timely replies so I hope this is okay.
2010 E91 328i X-drive. I installed a 3-stage intake manifold, got the ECU back from Turner today and popped it in. Car starts but is revving and throwing a lot of CCID codes: 351 - 4x4 & DSC Failure 419 - Drive Malfunction 24 - DBC Dynamic Brake Control Assist Failed 354 - Start Assist Inactive 29 - Engine Problem - Power Reduced Okay, went back and tried again. Car is now running more smoothly (not revving) but is giving me the warning symbols for the 4x4 issue and the engine issue with these codes: 351 - 4x4 & DSC Failure 354 - Start Assist Inactive 29 - Engine - Power Reduced My questions: 1. What could I have done wrong or could be wrong with the install and reconnect of everything? 2. Could part of the problem be the PCV breather hose that most write-ups say will likely break when removed? Mind did not break (that I am aware of) and seemed in good shape and pretty flexible, not brittle at all. It may have been changed when the valve cover gasket was done before my ownership. I reused it, although I do have a new one on hand. 3. Could there be something wrong with the tune? Could Turner have flashed it for a RWD rather than an X-Drive? Would that cause the 4x4 warning? |

Hmm. Sounds like they might have flashed it for RWD. Were any of these on before the flash? Did you have the intake on before the flash?

No, none of these codes were on before the intake and flash. The intake was not on before the flash. ECU was pulled and sent off and while it was out I swapped the intake.

Have you tried turning the steering wheel all the way left
and right. 4x4 failure is normal when you do a battery disconnect in order to reinitialize the failure turning the steering wheel all the way right and left re calibrates something. But that comment about the them not giving a 4x4 update to the DME may be correct to. I would call them after doing he steering wheel reset thing if it doesn't clear things up. The start assist problem is something else. Has your battery gone flat? Try putting a slow full charge on it. What kind of scanner do you have? |

Okay, it was me! I was the doofus. The throttle position sensor was not connected properly - not seated all the way in. With the codes I got from the Carly diagnostic, the Turner guys thought it might be the TPS and it was. All is great now - car is much quicker on acceleration and has much more pulling power, just feels so much . . . more.
Thanks for all the input. |

I paid $650 for the manifold with two new, unused DISA valves. I also ordered new gaskets and a PCV breather hose. The manifold came with one but it was old/used and, based on all the DIY write-ups which said that 9 out of 10 times this hose breaks during removal, I ordered a new one. As it turns out, I did not break the one already on my car and it appeared to be in really good shape and new-ish so I am guessing it was replaced when the PO had the valve cover gasket replaced. So I reused it. I can return the new one or sell it on Ebay or on this forum. The tune from Turner was $486. I pulled the ECU Monday morning, packaged it and sent it out via Fedex. Turner got it the next morning, reflashed it and sent it back out via UPS overnight. I got it this morning around 9:30 a.m., so not bad - less than a 48 hour turnaround. All told, about $1,150. It can be done for less if you are confident enough to use the free Bimmerlabs 330i tune. I wish that I had thought about doing the starter as a preemptive measure while the manifold was off. On the other hand the starter has given me no problems and now that I have done it once, pulling the manifold will be easier next time. |
