Do you enjoy your transmission?

Just curious on how everyone feels about their Transmission choice.

Whether it be 6MT, or Steptronic.

I might go with a 6MT, just because I feel that it adds a more "sporty" feel to the car.

Got a step and I like it a lot, but I'm not gonna lie, a 6mt is the way to go. Every time I drive a stick I slap myself for choosing an auto. Paddle shifting is fun, but it gets boring after a while. Now I just use the console mounted shifter to shift and wish I had a clutch to operate.

There's no other reason to get a 6mt other than the fact that it's so much more fun to drive. It'll hurt resale in the US, but damn it's so much fun.

on my 325i. I love it in D because of its smoothness. but in DS, it is so jerky as if I am driving a MT. is this normal? I rarely use DS because of this

I regret the 328 Step choice, the tranny sucks. Had i know this beforehand (not revealed on a 5 min test drive) I would have gone for the 335 for this reason alone, or a MT 328

For myself... there is only one transmission choice, and that has always been, and always will be, the true manual. I have the 6-speed in my current BMW and I am very pleased with it. I have installed the "M" shift knob and boot that gives it the shorter shifter, which is a great feel.

I had a 328xiT AT non-ZSP service loaner last week, and I kissed my own car when I got it back.

I like the traditional manual transmission because I find that a traditional torque converter automatic makes precise throttle inputs during aggressive cornering close to impossible.

I find that torque converter automatic trans cars don't response to changes in throttle very well because some of the throttle application goes towards locking up the torque converter before the vehicle rotates as I intended.

Perhaps my opinion will change if future automatic transmissions come with locked torque converter (such as IS-F) or dual clutches instead of a torque converter

I've got the 6MT and I love it.

ONCE IN A WHILE, I wish had the step, like when I'm tired or stuck in stop and go traffic. One advantage of the step I've never seen mentioned is I could put my seat further back. I have to sit closer than I really like so I can operate the clutch properly.

But overall, I love the 6MT. Plus, I like the challenge of trying to shift perfectly all the time.

If you are OCD like me and like to feel in total control of the car, you have to get the 6MT.

No torque converter between you and the engine provides an addictive immediacy between you, the car and the road.

I love my 6MT. I'll keep buying full manual cars as long as they keep making them. I really disliked the one auto-equipped car I've ever owned, and traded it in after about a year.

+100

I love my 6MT, it is the best I have ever used, and a perfect way to hear that loverly inline 6 work its way up and down the rev range. There is nothing like it, and nothing like having complete control.

There have been many threads like this one over the years and everyone tries to convince the others that either the step or the 6mt is the best. At the end of the day it comes down to your personal preference and the driving conditions you have locally.

I am sad to say that my next car will have to be an auto for a number of reasons I think it will make me go buy a second car with a manual transmission for weekend fun though maybe a 6cyl E30 will do the job nicely... I've never owned an auto though, so who knows I may only last 6 months with it before I am driven insane
