Exclamation Check engine soon, and Check engine dashboard light on!

I have a 2007 335i, and i was driving down the highway and the check engine dashboard light and check engine soon light both came on. It the did not allow me to go any faster and i was stuck on the highway. I turned it off and on and i finished driving. Now whenever i start the car, it barely starts up, and when it does, she shakes real bad. Do you guys know anything about this??

There could be several reasons for this occuring. Do you have access to an Obd II code reader to see what is triggering the CEL?

You can also visually inspect your engine bay if you're comfortable doing this. Your charge pipe may have went bye bye, it's a big weak point if you haven't upgraded it yet.

Careful because the scanner needs to be able to read bmw specific codes

Yes but won't any generic Obd II reader be able to pull up the codes at the very least? Please correct me if I'm wrong, still new to the platform (as you know)

To my knowledge in order to read some of the codes bmw sends you need to have a bmw specific reader or one the reads bmw codes. This doesn’t mean that no codes will pull up but you should have one that can read bmw codes specifically.

Maybe I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure that’s the case

Most do just google bmw obd2 readers

Got it, I just use my cobb to pull up any codes so I haven't had to go that route reading codes. Regardless, OP should 100% use google.

Without codes we’ll be guessing.

When we the last time it had new plugs/coils/walnut blast? Get the codes read and report back.

For future reference, does a craftsman OBD2 reader work for the E90's?
