Understanding Apple Car Play

So I just took delivery of my X5 40i on Monday this week. Have used it for just 2 drives up until now as it went to the PPF shop a day later after I took delivery.

However, in those 2 drives I realized that everytime I get in the car, the apple car play menu/display doesn't come up automatically. I have to click/touch the carplay icon on the top of the iDrive screen and then it shows my phone on Carplay. Also, I cannot enable my WiFi on the phone if carplay is connected. Is that true?

This is the first time I am using Apple Carplay btw so please excuse my ignorance.

I basically want to have a set up where I get in the car and it automatically connects to my phone and displays the phone screen on carplay. Is this even possible or does it have to be selected manually?

It might needs to be coded for CarPlay to come up automatically.
And, since it's a wireless CarPlay, you can't connect to another WiFi - it used WiFi and Bluetooth for connection.
I have 2nd iPhone with data plan that I always keep in the car for CarPlay. It's jailbroken and with CarBridge tweak I use any app on the car display such as Youtube, Facebook to watch videos. No video-in-motion unlock is needed.
The only problem is - on native YouTube app video and sound goes out of synch a little, I think it because of wireless CarPlay connection.
But if I use safari or chrome browser for YouTube - it works good.
Also, I wanted to use my 2nd iPhone as WiFi hotspot in the car for my dash cam, but can't do it anymore, since CarPlay uses the WiFi.
It was pissing me off. Because I have a pickup truck where CarPlay connects thru the lighting cable and it works just fine - no video/sound out synch, WiFi is available for hotspot...

So, finally I decide to enable WiFi hotspot in the car and it helped. Since iPhone uses same WiFi connection for CarPlay and car hotspot, you can use car WiFi for internet connection for CarPlay needs. And I was able to connect dash cam to the car hotspot as well.
It's same $20 a month that I was paying data service on my 2nd iPhone...

This article talks about how to set WiFi priorities on an iPhone. I have not done this, but might be something to try. I don't know if it will drop the house network once the iDrive initiates or not... but worth a try. the iPhone has the ability to have multiple Bluetooth connections simultaneously so that issues is a bit confusing.
