40i Engine New?
Curious if the G05 40i engine is new or if it is used in other BMW's. Trying to gauge the reliability and if there are any common known issues. I put a lot of miles on my vehicles (currently have 200k on an 07 X5 4.8) so long-term reliability is a priority. Thank you for your comments.

In various states of tune, the B58 3.0 engine has been around for over three years now.
Also used in the x40i 1/2/3/4/5 series cars, some in xDrive form. It's SUV implementation has some form with the X3 M40i which has been around for a couple of years I guess. I've read nothing but good things about the engine and it was flawless in the 440i that I ran for 32 months - albeit low mileage use with plenty of urban commuting. IMHO, it's a wonderful engine and makes the six cylinder diesels sound like tractors in comparison.

Thanks for sharing. Interesting they say the start stop is unnoticeable which in my case is definitely not true. I also rarely see 20+ mpg despite trying to be gentle on the throttle which is the opposite of this article’s claim. Oh well.

Mine is basically unnoticeable. I have had people in the car and I mentioned it and they said they never noticed it. I'm regularly averaging over 24mpg with mixed driving. Will be heading out on a long road trip next week and would imagine I will be in the 26-27 area but we will see.

I just completed a 200 mile road trip to and from Baltimore. Driving between 75 and 80 mph using CC, I averaged 27.8 mpg. I did have to cross a couple of large hills, MD calls them mountains but there are only about 1000 ft.

There seems to be a BIG spread in mileage between city & highway...4,900 lbs is a lot of weight in stop/go driving. I'm breaking in (680 miles), and mileage is at 22.4 in mixed driving. Econ mode seems to really improve mileage (used a few times), but wouldn't use outside hwy trip...response feels like I'm hauling 1,000 lbs of sand. Can't wait for 'Sport" to be an option. Tried briefly, generated grins. So far, very impressed with this motor...almost total lack of turbo lag, feels much greater than 335 hp.

Lead foot. LOL I set my cruise at 83 on the interstate and am usually in the upper 20s as long as the wind isn't strong against me, that would be in comfort or Eco Pro.

I agree, it is a weird feeling. A few times I have forgotten to take it out of Eco Pro after getting off the highway and immediately feel the difference trying to accelerate from a stop.

After 11000 miles I have experienced no problems. MPG average around 28. I used Eco mode for the first 6 months of driving, now I am using Sport most of the time. I see slightly lower mpg but not much. Sport is much more lively plus you tend to use less braking when slowing down or coming to a stop. Its nice to have a high 500 mile range when you fill up the car.

I disabled ASS first thing - but it was MUCH less obtrusive with the 48v mild hybrid then other ASS systems I’ve driven.
My mileage - 85% highway - at gun’em speeds - is about 22 mpg. And I’ve a heavy foot. 14 months/15k in. I think the engine is bulletproof. It’s an in-line 6 from BMW. |

What year is your car? BMW added a mild hybrid system a year or so ago which greatly improves start/stop and makes it almost unnoticeable

I have 44k miles on my 22 X6m40i and averaging 24.8mpg mixed driving since delivery. You simply cant find this mileage and performance in any other power train.
