Auto Transmission - D to DS While Moving?
Sorry if this has been covered, didn't find it in my searches.
I have a 2007 328i, with auto transmission. I believe I have seen this work, but I was wondering if there is any downside to switching between D and DS mode while moving. I believe I have done this at low speed without problem, but was wondering if it is safe to do? Does it in any way harm the transmission while moving? Also, is it safe to do at any speed? (If I am on a one lane highway and need to pass, can I pop it into DS from D without hesitation going 60+?) Thanks so much, only been on this addictive forum for a month and a half or so with my very first BMW, and am LOVING it. (car and forum.) |

yeah man, of course it's ok. do this at whatever speed you like, it will be fine. Never even heard a question like this to be honest.

Go ahead and do it, your speed doesn't matter
Not to worry, the tranny software won't let you do anything too stupid.

all it does is drop you a gear and hold the revs longer. not much different from sporty driving in a manual. look at it this way, if it was a bad idea, BMW would not let you do it, right?

Thanks all - have some fun passing to do tomorrow on drive to the beach! First time on passable highways with the new car and wanted to make absolutely certain I can get best MPG while cruising in D, while still getting max performance when some dummy is going 60 in a 55 on a long straight rural road through corn fields. Can't wait! (I love this whole loving your car thing, not used to it one bit!)
