(PCV related ???) What is this tube, where is it, and how do I replace it - photos...

My car is a 2006 325xi. I had to take it to a local shop to have a starter installed. During the installation, the mechanic discovered some shoddy repair work. A tube was taped/glued together. He said I need to replace this tube. He referred to it a a PCV tube (or something to that effect). He said my car would have the "arctic" version (or some cold weather term, I think it was arctic). I don't know exactly where the part is on the car, as I only saw the pictures. He didn't show it to me on the car. He did say with the broken tube, the oil could leak out, so I assume it's on or near the oil pan.

So, when I got home, I figured I'd look the part up and see if I could find how to change it to see if I could do it myself and save a few bucks.

I can't find the part online, and I can't find any tutorials on how to replace it.

What is this thing and how do I change it???

Just as a note for clarification CCV is also known as Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)system.

I think what your mechanic meant using the term "artic" is the Crank Case Ventilation system has heated vent hoses. The heated hoses are to prevent oil gelling in the vent tubing in sub-zero temperatures. All N52 engines in 2006 for the North American market use a CCV system with heated hoses. In the schematic below from realoem.com, hoses Item 3 and Item 4, are electrically heated (you can seen the wire connector in the drawing). So one of those hoses was broken at some point earlier and repaired. The 2006 version of the N52 is unique to the E90 chassis, as it uses a magnesium valve cover, which uses a differently configured CCV system. The 2007 and up versions of the N52 use a plastic valve cover, which has the oil separator integral to the valve cover. The 2006 magnesium valve cover does not have the oil separator built into the cover, so it uses an external oil separator, which is Item 1 in the schematic pictured below.

I'm surprised that the mechanic replaced the starter and not recommend to you to fix the broken hose while he had the engine disassembled, because to replace the broken hose, the intake manifold will have to be removed again. The intake manifold needs to be removed to replace the starter. The CCV components are plastic and deteriorate structurally over time, so the best practice is to just replace all the components shown in the schematic. The total price of the parts is about $350 (on-line part prices), but again, the intake manifold has to be removed to make the repairs.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
