Bmw Tells Dealers Recall On Hpfp

Hi guys,

well my car just experienced a loss of power and later in the day 1/2 engine light = suspected fuel pump.

I called the local dealer and spoke with a SA. I informed him it sounds like HPFP...

He responded by saying this could be a problem, If this is a HPFP failure BMW has recalled all HPFPs and will not allow any service work to repair the HPFP until further notice.

(very polite and not argumentive)
I responded by saying my car is a possible safety risk and unreliable what should I do ? Sit on the car till BMW resolves the issue ? He stated the first appointment was the 18th uh can you do anything ? I can put you in a loaner for a week for us to diagnose the problem and after that if its the HPFP we'll put you in a rental.

He stated he had no idea when the new pumps will arrive and quite frankly this sounds like the first time when they all crapped out and people were getting buybacks.

We'll see how this plays out... I cant see BMW doing what they need to do in 30 days...

I can't imagine BMW would be doing buy-backs over a $200 fuel pump...with their earnings last quarter going down the crapper, that just doesn't make much sense...

good luck with the situation!

The new pumps are available. My dealer put one in my E92 two weeks ago. I confirmed that it was a new pump with the service manager as well as the shop foreman. The older pumps have been recalled.

Yes this happened today...

the other recall or TSB referred to "certain cars " in a certail date period and they would be swapped out with the "newly revised" model... but as we know the newly revised model is questionable too...

i find it strange im the first person to post about this. but i guess there has to be the one... If there is anything further I'll ask tomorrow at 845

I already have an appt for next Monday for my paint defect.

But I have a SES light on and my car is revving up by itself at almost a complete stop, so I think my fuel pump is about to go too. I'll see what happens next week.

All these fuel pump issues going around. Who designed the fuel pump anyways? I know the turbos are from Mitsubishi.

$2000 list price for the pump, 2700 total replacement cost.

they probably have a severe supply problem with the new part

odd, when you pull up the part number for the original pump, it shows it being superceded by a new part number, remanufactured, for 1/5th the price
13537537320 has been replaced by 13517585655

i dont know if this was changed recently....

^ I dont know what caused the error code on my car yet... it may be the SIB you mentioned. I just wanted to let everybody know what was discussed regarding the HPFP's by the SA.

btw i dropped off my car today and the SA echoed the same thing... no more info though. He'll call me later today to let me know what the error code is.

Cost for us, not BMW....which i guarantee is a hell of a lot less than that, especially relative to buying back a car.

what seems like yesterday but was a year or two ago...

bmw just came out with the 335i TT. With the low quantity , high demand and now experienced failed HPFP's customers were forced to wait over 30 days to have their new car repaired. once it hit 30 days BMW gets very accomodating as to avoid a lemon law claim.

$2k for an electric fuel pump is outrageous. especially given the failure rate, you would think if they were that expensive that at least they would be over-engineered to the point of being bullit-proof. Sadly that is not the case.

I replaced an electric pump for the well water in my home which is a part that cost roughly $2500 and its 100% stainless steel except for the diaphram and it pumps 6 gallons a minute through 500 feet of 2 inch pipe. Now thats a high pressure pump. An automobile fuel pump shouldn't cost as much as $2k even with dealer markups what they are.

It seems these pumps don't like ethanol, but even beyond that I wonder if they are so large that when your tank is near empty, they can't be fully submerged, so they lack cooling.

Our cars have two pumps one in the tank and the HPFP near/on the engine.

as far as confirmation of a recall I was hoping somebody else would chime in...

UPDATE:

turns out faulty info from the SA...

he said my car was the fuel pump problem (which is now replaced same day)
and when i questioned about the recall, no selling of pumps etc that he originally stated.
he said bmw came out with a bulletin end of july regarding pump replacement.

Sorry to get you guys excited... i was hoping bmw would get a good design that doesnt fail soo quickly... maybe down the road after the investigation ?

500 feet straight up is 216.75 psi. The N54 HPFP is 1600-1700 psi iirc.

Your pump is certainly higher volume, but the pressure isn't even in the ballpark. It sounds like a lot of people still picturing the pump in the gas tank.
