Custom Order Instructions...

My X5 is due to arrive in the next week or so. We are going to be on vacation for the next ~3 so will have to wait until I get back to pickup. It is appropriate to tell them not to allow anyone to drive the car and keep it on the back lot? My biggest concern is that since I am getting a unicorn with a third row I would hate for it to be crashed in a test drive and have to start all over...

Thoughts? Seems to make sense to me...

Yes. Dealer should mark the car as sold or hold and keep it off their sellable inventory. I'd ask the CA to send you pics of the car and odometer when it arrives. Let them know you expect it to have the same number of miles when you pickup. Best to ask them to not PDI it until you're back. Let it sit with the plastic wrap on the panels for the next 3 weeks. This way you'll avoid the car ending up on the showroom floor.

Talked to my salesperson... she said no customers will drive the car and it will be kept in the back. She said the car will have ~12 miles on it for the prepuchase inspection but that's the only driving it will see. Seems reasonable...

12 miles? That sounds a bit high for a brand new car, no? I have experience in the past for which a dealer was trying to sell me a brand new vehicle with odo around that area, and it was the dealer's test drive vehicle for prospective customers.

I think the lowest I have ever seen on a new car was 8 miles and I have bought a lot of cars... I don't REALLY care about the mileage. It's a lease so in three years I just get a new one...

Well there you go! We'll see what happens. I feel a little jerky if I email her back and say no more than 10 miles.

Magic! It's documented on other posts but long story short my local dealer said they had two allocations for an X5 build with 3rd row seat. I didn't believe it but they confirmed with the Regional... See pic below. Is shows 3rd row....

Congrats.
I would gently ask her to send pics when the car arrives.
