Ditched the runflats........

My E92 came with 225/35/19 and 255/30/19 Bridgestone runflats - poor ride, a bit of tramlining, half decent grip but nothing special. Interestingly though my E90 was on the same tyre but 18", and they were far far worse!!

Last week I came across a brand new set of non RFT Michelin PS2's in 235/35/19 and 265/30/19 on Ebay and bought them for £600

Went to my usual tyre fitter who refused to fit them, then tried another one who also refused - both said that the wheel wasn't designed to take normal tyres etc etc

Ended up at AA Tyres and Exhausts in Northampton who gladly fitted them - took an hour of struggling but got there in the end, no damage to the wheels

Anyway.........first few miles I hated them, felt like I was on ice - but we all know that it takes 100 miles or so to bed them in............

They are now run in and they are fantastic Far more grip, the ride is still firm but not in the same league as the RFT's.

I would say to anyone that is unhappy with the RFT's, ditch them, they compromise the car IMO

Just need to sell the RFT's now lol

If anyone wants the details of the guy I got the tyres off, PM me - dont know if he can get any more but its worth a try.

Good to hear another one has turned to the "darkside" with the Michelin PS2's Top tyre!

I know someone else was armed and ready with the PS2's - keep us informed Sheps.

Simpleton questions about the 'speed rating' (I think this is what I mean) - the figures at the end of the tyre reference. How important is it that they 100% match what you are replacing.

My fronts are currently '225/40R18 88W' whereas the PS2's that MOB just informed me of end with 92Y. Is this vital to stick with 88W's?? Obviously I don't know what my car left the factory with as I presume the tyres have been replaced once I don't know whether they were done like-for-like.

Explained here;

http://www.blackcircles.com/general/sidewall

You would be increasing both the speed and load ratings, which I think is fine?

No you don't have to stick to the same. Your new tyres have a better rating so you're fine. However, you should not select tyres with a lower rating

This amused me. One of my mates (a pro tyre fitter) fitted a PS2 runflat onto a 193 rim for me. He threw the first bead on without even using the machine and then just rolled the second bead on as usual. He did say to me though that he wouldn't let any of his fitters do run flats. Does help if you know what you are doing.

Regards

Chris

I'm still trying to make up my mind on bloody tyres

I still really want to stay with runflats, to be honest i think the bridgestones on now have lasted really well but of course tramlining is a nightmare. If I had MSport suspension then i wouldnt hesitate to go for non rft's.

I have seen some Good Year Eagle NCT5 runflats which i can get cheap, but I need to know if anyone has had any experience with these first ??

Good buy Mob, I rather suspect it was you that outbid me!

There are a couple of 255/35/19 on the bay from the same seller @ £200,not quite the right size though.

I'm going down the same route - changing to non runflats,I'm toying with the idea of sticking some cheapo Falken 452's on @ £400 odd, or going with Contisports at £800 odd, just to see what the difference is all about.

I'm going down the same route, slightly bigger front/rear as per the Alpina setup.

Hey Budgie, yes, we must have a mini meet on the M25 again, what's wrong with people though,we only had a brief chat for a few minutes and 2 lanes of traffic came to a standstill and they get upset, what's that all about

Eclipse the DXB, nah, what was I thinking about!

I saw the tyres on Ebay and sent him a message offering £500 for the 4 tyres I wanted. He came back with £600 and I did the deal outside of Ebay.

He still finished the auction so must have had more than one set!!
