Why is this not considered a true m ? I know that the new x3 m is coming out which has ridiculous 500plus hp but thought the m40i was m version at first .

Different suspension. Different motor. Different brakes. Those are just a few differences. The list goes on.

These are 'M' performance vehicles they bridge the gap between series cars and ///M cars. Similar to Audi with their 'S' cars and MB with their smaller 43/53 motors. They get M wheels and improved M sport suspension and engine tune but not a full on M developed vehicle or engine. Think of it as a M lite or M inspired model. Never mistake it for a full on M car.
