BMS Pedal tuner install M35i

Installation:
It's a snap. Remove the cap for the pedal bolt, remove the t30, push up and pull out and the pedal is off. Unplug the pedal, install the jumper to the car side and the other side to the pedal, shove everything under the carpet and out of the way and re-install pedal.

I currently just set the controller in the center console, I haven't decided where I want it to go yet, honestly I don't think I will mess with the settings much, I just wanted comfort to be slightly less dead feeling. I figure throughout the week I can decide if I want it out in the open or tucked away.

I took a quick lap out onto the main road and back into the neighborhood and the throttle response in green with +2 mapping is about where sport is normally. I bumped it down to +1 but I really need to drive to and from work to decide where it really needs to be.

First impression is Yeah you could just run in sport and achieve similar results, but sometimes I don't like the way revs hang in sport and it will be nice to have that get up and go in comfort.

Another great use will be in Eco you can get the transmission decoupling for highway use without the complete slug of a pedal that mode offers.

Half an hour in and I say it's a definite go. Will report back.

Wow definitely sounds promising! I do like to "goof off" with other modes such as eco on the highway but it really is a dog. With the active sound off at least driving in sport mode is about the same. Every once in a while I click it down to comfort on the highway and the stop and go really is not nice.. in Boston here it's pretty cuthroat and so the lack of pedal response even in comfort gets me cut off quite a bit more than in sport mode.. wonder if sport mode is more aggressive mostly in terms of that little dead spot when coming to a top and say waiting to take a left or right at an intersection.

what are these other modes you speak of, there is something besides sport? I may have to try them out (not) The immature kid in me really likes sport. I took a short ride (70 miles) on the highway and did it mostly in comfort. I fail to see the reason (for me only and my need for silliness) to ever drive any appreciable distance in ECO. I can afford the gas. FWIW I drove (drive on occasion) my 335 almost exclusively in sport for the throttle response. If this wasn't a lease I think I would try that pedal tuner out, sounds intriguing

The 335 is about to go on the sales block (hard to part with my first BMW)

I played around with the other modes today and eco + race pedal mode is funny. I actually erased the gain I got from gliding down a hill as soon as I got on throttle.

It would be great if this would eliminate or at least reduce that throttle lag that can be so potentially dangerous...as well as reducing that feel of the BMW being a so-called driver's machine. Even my Nissan Xtrail (rogue) petrol with CVT doesn't have this transmission lag, nor of course any turbo lag, so you can predict it will respond to throttle inputs.

Please keep reporting back on your testing... esp if it helps in situations like ricerocket describes above. I often don't try to merge because I worry that the lag will cause me trouble.

This option looks good as it wouldn't cause any strain on the injectors, turbo, etc and should be easy enough to remove before any servicing. Wonder if it would cause error codes to show up in diagnostics

cheers

There is obviously still turbo lag, but, for example, when you turn and are in the low rpm band that should probably call for a shift, but doesn’t because you’re not calling for enough throttle to get one, that doesn’t happen any more.

billnchristy, yup that's exactly the sort of scenario I'd like to cure.

Understand there will still be some turbo lag, but hoping it's not too bad, esp on the X2 s20i with its low pressure, presumably smaller turbos compared to the m35i

Very tempted to order this. Presume it works on normal non M35 X2s, as the website just says BMW from 2006 onward.

Should work for everything. If you don't like it I don't imagine you'd have a hard time moving it and would only pay a very slight rental fee.

How does stage 2, and/or stage 3 feel in SPORT mode?

Not manual/sport, but auto-sport?

I had done something like this on a few past cars, but it seems that it is priced right and actually works on this car.

Prolly gonna get one too! Thanks for the support!

How do these work? I never imagined the accelerator pedal unit would contain any computer as such, I thought it would just be a simple sender unit and the main ECU would do the electronic throttle processing?

cheers

Once you've got the settings you like, can you disconnect the controller part, or does stay permanently fixed to the unit? cheers

It stays attached, but nothing says you can't just stuff it under the dash.

As for "race" pedal + sport mode. It's frisky. Not unmanagable but very lively and I dropped .4 mpg after using it for less than half a mile.

I would consider it a digital potentiometer or encoder, I would imagine it just adds to the signal which basically tells the computer the pedal is further down.

So in comfort it adds lets say +1 to the input so instead of having to push past 1/4 throttle to get a response it lets you ease in and not have that big lag.

So this weekend I wanted to 'feel' what I might be missing that you all are talking about since I always drive in Sport Mode - Aggressively. And let me tell you, by not driving in Sport Mode, I can definitely see and tell what you all are talking about! GOSH. I'll be ordering one of these shortly.

I've been testing out things a lot more lately in my commute to drop the kids off at camp. I find that in the sport mode with the paddle to the left (sport +) is the MOST aggressive.. ie the car seems to respond the best, the pops and crackles are the loudest. In a way surprising because when I manually shift the paddles myself it isn't the same. I wonder if there is any different programming that the car would like you to just leave it in the sports plus compared to the manual mode shifting. I'm on the fence if I should "invest" in the pedal tuner or not. With the active sound off I can leave it in sports mode and it's the same sound as comfort yet it's peppy. So why then leave it in comfort? The only bonus I think is the eco mode that disengages the transmission to coast, and that could certainly use a boost in the pedal response since it's a total dog at that point. A little more sensitivity in the dead spots when stopping and turning would be nice, but not to the sacrifice of a twitchy pedal on the start/stop. Still thinking this one over, but much thanks for billnchristy for keeping us updated!

So today, I purposely drove around (in safe areas) and drove like an a$$hat in the different modes. I do always drive in Sport and use the paddles, but I did pay attention to more of the rev hang like others talked about. Driving in comfort is just absolute crap compared to Sport. I am going to order the BMS so that if I don't use any manual shifting, the car is as peppy as possible, and yet when I do use manual shifting in Sport, it won't suck. Give me some time, and I'll advise as well. Definitely got a bug up my arse at this point. Thanks bnc!

Do the US vehicles have the DSG gearbox that you can shift across into M/S mode? If so, does the "S" mode do essentially the same thing as a pedal tuner?

Seems to improve light throttle response, but it holds the gears longer..much longer.

It would be nice to have the throttle response improved, but gears shifting up normally. Does the pedal tuner do that?

thanks

In short, yes. You can go beyond the throttle response of sport without the need to cruise around at 5k if you happen to let off the throttle.
